Equinix announced that Douglas Merrill has been appointed Chief Information Security Officer, effective immediately. Merrill will report to Harmeen Mehta, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Innovation Officer. He will lead the company’s global security organization with responsibility for information security operations, cybersecurity risk management, and the development of core security platforms and controls to support the trust and resilience of Equinix and its customers.
Merrill brings over three decades of experience in guiding enterprises through technology modernization and security transformation. He has been serving as Equinix’s interim CISO for the past six months, during which he reorganized the company’s security organization and implemented a strategic framework designed to integrate security into products and services from the beginning of the development process. He also led enhancements to cross-functional coordination across engineering, product, and operations teams.
Before joining Equinix, Merrill was a partner at McKinsey, where he advised clients on large-scale, technology-driven organizational transformations. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Information Officer at Google, where he contributed to the development of the company’s technology vision. He has held additional leadership roles at technology companies, founded several ventures, and earned recognition for his work in cloud security, AI, and digital transformation. Merrill holds master’s and doctoral degrees in cognitive science from Princeton University and is a published author with patents in machine learning.
Equinix continues to expand its digital infrastructure platform and support for global customers as demand grows for secure, scalable data center and interconnection services. The appointment strengthens the company’s focus on security as a key pillar of its product development and operational strategy.
