Evergreen Cooperatives, a nonprofit focused on revitalizing urban neighborhoods by creating pathways to wealth building, has expanded its portfolio of employee-owned businesses with the acquisition of North Coast Sign and Lighting, a full-service provider of light installation solutions and commercial signage based in Medina, Ohio.

The transaction represents another investment by the Fund for Employee Ownership, Evergreen Cooperatives’ social impact initiative designed to support business transitions to employee ownership. North Coast Sign and Lighting has more than 40 years of experience serving Northeast and Central Ohio with illuminated and non-illuminated signage and lighting installation and maintenance services. The company’s employees will remain with the business as it transitions to employee ownership, creating new opportunities for shared wealth and long-term stability. Financial terms were not disclosed.

North Coast Sign and Lighting specializes in end-to-end signage solutions spanning design, permitting, fabrication, installation, and repair, along with parking lot and building lighting services for commercial clients across the region. The transition to employee ownership preserves the company’s operating team and customer relationships while giving employees a direct financial stake in the success of the business they help build. Selling owner James Briola described his intent to ensure that the employees who helped build the business had the opportunity to share in its success as the primary motivation for pursuing employee ownership rather than a conventional sale to an outside buyer.

Evergreen Cooperatives Chief Investment Officer Jeanette Webster welcomed North Coast Sign and Lighting to the organization’s portfolio of employee-owned companies, citing the firm’s long-standing reputation for quality and service as evidence that it is well-positioned to grow and thrive under employee ownership. Evergreen’s model focuses on creating durable, community-rooted businesses that generate wealth for workers while providing economic stability in urban and surrounding communities. The organization has built a track record of successful employee ownership transitions across multiple business types in Ohio.

The acquisition reflects growing interest among retiring business owners in employee ownership as an alternative to conventional sale processes, particularly in regions where preserving local jobs and community economic impact are priorities alongside achieving a fair exit value for the selling owner.
