At a recent AI for Social Good Summit in Bangalore, India, Facebook announced that it is going to back women-led artificial intelligence startups and offer 100 scholarships for related projects. And Facebook is going to launch an innovation accelerator focused on artificial intelligence for social good.
Facebook will be hosting “Women in AI” hackathons in order to boost women-led startups focused on AI. Winners will be offered courses on artificial intelligence and machine learning courses by professors at IIT Madras. The scholarships will enable the recipients to access advanced deep learning courses. And Facebook will be conducting application-based artificial intelligence training programs as part of Facebook Hubs for startups across 20 locations in order to help them scale and through mentoring workshops.
Facebook AI product director Ragavan Srinivasan said that the company is planning to advance artificial intelligence in a “responsible and inclusive manner,” according to KNN. The event also featured discussions about how artificial intelligence could be used for healthcare, education, agriculture, and disaster mitigation.
One of the recent services that Facebook built with artificial intelligence that has been used for good is the “Blood Donation Tool.” The Blood Donation Tool connects blood banks with registered donors. And more than 35 million people signed up to be donors around the world.
Plus Facebook partnered with NGO Seeds India to create disaster maps for Kerala during the floods last year. These maps helped NGO Seeds India and other organizations appropriate time early recovery and relief operations.
