Fedex announced yesterday that FedEx Ground will begin delivering packages seven days a week year-round starting January 2020. Fedex says this move is being made to meet the demands of online shoppers.
This announcement comes nine months after Fedex Ground’s switch to a six-day-a-week year-round delivery schedule.
Seven-day delivery isn’t entirely new to Fedex because the delivery giant already delivers packages seven days a week during the holidays.
Fedex is the first of the three major US delivery services to begin offering seven day year-round delivery.
“We have made significant investments in capacity, technology and automation at FedEx Ground over the past 20 years. These investments have allowed us to gain ground market share for 19 of the last 20 years, and we are now ideally positioned to extend that growth as the average daily volume for small parcels in the U.S. is expected to double by 2026. Expanding our operations to include Sunday residential deliveries further increases our ability to meet the demands of e-commerce shippers and online shoppers.” said Raj Subramaniam, Fedex President and COO.
In addition to offering seven day deliveries, Fedex is also integrating into its Ground operations nearly 2 million SmartPost package deliveries that were previously handled by USPS.
“Delivery density has consistently been a challenge with e-commerce,” Raj Subramaniam said. “We anticipate substantial density improvement and efficiency opportunities when all residential packages are sorted and delivered within the same ground network.”
Fedex also said that it is improving capabilities for delivery of large items. The company says that it is making significant enhancements to its shipping operations to ensure reliable handing of large packages including televisions and furniture. Large packages account for more than 10 percent of FedEx Ground’s volume
Fedex handles more than 14 million shipments on an average day. And FedEx Ground transports nearly 9 million packages daily.
