Fervo Energy And Google Sign 396 MW Geothermal Power Purchase Agreement

Fervo Energy and Google have signed a 396 MW power purchase agreement supporting continued development of Fervo’s Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems project in Utah, representing what Fervo describes as the world’s largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date.

Cape Station is expected to come online in 2028. Under the agreement, Google will purchase carbon-free electricity intended to serve as a foundational power source for a potential data center in Utah.

Fervo will also give Google an option to expand its electricity purchases by approximately 600 MW, which would bring total potential offtake to nearly 1 GW by June 2030.

Final plans for Google’s potential Utah data center remain subject to engineering feasibility, regulatory approvals and commercial conditions.

The agreement builds on a relationship between Google and Fervo that began with Project Red, Fervo’s commercial geothermal pilot in Nevada.

Project Red began operating in 2023 and supplies electricity to the local grid, including Google’s Nevada data centers.

Fervo subsequently signed a 115 MW PPA with Google and NV Energy in 2024, helping establish the Clean Transition Tariff structure for adding geothermal power to Nevada’s electricity system without shifting project costs to other customers.

The new agreement is part of Fervo’s continued expansion of Cape Station beyond its initial 100 MW phase.

Fervo is scaling the project through standardized GeoBlock development and its GeoCluster approach, which is designed to provide modular, scalable electricity supply for data center customers.

Subject to regulatory approvals, Utah’s SB132 is also expected to provide Fervo and Google with additional flexibility for direct-to-load contracting.
