Fivetran And dbt Labs Complete Merger To Build Trusted AI Data Infrastructure

Fivetran announced the completion of its merger with dbt Labs, creating a combined company focused on delivering the data infrastructure needed to support trusted AI agents at scale. The all-stock transaction, which was originally announced in October 2025, brings together two leading data platforms that serve more than 100,000 data teams globally. The combined company will initially operate as Fivetran + dbt Labs, with George Fraser continuing as CEO and Tristan Handy serving as President.

The merger is designed to address the growing demand for reliable, governed, and AI-ready data as organizations increasingly deploy autonomous AI agents. By combining Fivetran’s data movement and synchronization capabilities with dbt Labs’ data transformation, governance, and semantic modeling technologies, the company aims to create an open data infrastructure layer that enables AI agents to operate on trusted and high-quality data across enterprise environments.

According to the company, AI agents require a different type of data foundation than traditional analytics systems. As agents operate continuously and often autonomously, they depend on data that is current, accurate, governed, and accessible across multiple systems. The combined platform seeks to provide organizations with a flexible, cloud-agnostic architecture built on open standards that avoids vendor lock-in while maintaining governance, portability, and control.

The merger also introduces the first wave of joint product innovations from the combined company. These include the alpha release of dbt Core v2.0, which open sources the dbt Fusion engine runtime under an Apache 2.0 license; dbt State, a caching layer designed to reduce infrastructure costs by building only changed data assets; and dbt Wizard, an AI-powered assistant for model authoring, debugging, and refactoring.

Another major announcement is Agents Schema, an open-source standard that provides a shared context layer for AI agents. The framework allows organizations to store semantic models, metrics, lineage information, and business documentation in SQL tables that can be accessed by AI systems while remaining compatible with existing governance and security frameworks.

The combined company highlighted support from customers including Zendesk, Inova Health, Tinuiti, Shutterstock, and DocuSign, which are using Fivetran and dbt technologies to build trusted data foundations for analytics, AI applications, and agentic workflows.

Fivetran + dbt Labs said the new capabilities will be showcased at Snowflake Summit 2026 and represent the first step in a broader innovation roadmap focused on enabling trusted AI agents and enterprise-scale AI adoption.
