florrent: $9.5 Million Raised For Scaling Supercapacitor Technology

By Amit Chowdhry • Sep 10, 2025

florrent, an energy technology company based in Western Massachusetts, announced it has raised $9.5 million in an oversubscribed Seed-2 funding round. The investment was led by MassVentures and supported by Raven Indigenous Capital Partners, MassMutual Catalyst Fund, Boston Impact Initiative, Sky Foundation, Elbezius, Maroon Venture Partners Fund, and several mission-driven angel investors.

This funding will help florrent expand production of its proprietary Contoured Carbon material and accelerate the deployment of its advanced supercapacitor solutions.

florrent’s technology addresses a major challenge in the energy sector: the $150 billion annual problem of power quality and reliability. As the electrical grid undergoes rapid transformation—driven by distributed energy resources, electrification, and aging infrastructure—florrent’s supercapacitors offer a scalable and cost-effective way to stabilize power delivery. These devices are designed to work seamlessly with existing grid infrastructure, providing fast frequency response, improved power quality, and both front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter resilience.

At the heart of florrent’s innovation is Contoured Carbon, a next-generation activated carbon derived from domestic biomass waste. This material not only enhances the performance of supercapacitors but also contributes to carbon sequestration, reducing environmental impact. By repurposing waste into high-value energy storage media, florrent is creating new economic opportunities—especially for communities historically marginalized or affected by environmental degradation.

CEO Jose LaSalle emphasized that florrent’s mission goes beyond technical innovation. The company aims to build a profitable business that delivers strong unit economics while promoting social and environmental well-being. This includes partnering with underserved communities in its supply chain and ensuring that the benefits of the energy transition are widely shared.

MassVentures, which also led florrent’s Seed-1 round, reaffirmed its commitment to the company’s growth and impact. Raven Indigenous Capital Partners echoed this support, highlighting florrent’s potential to drive positive change for Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities through sustainable raw material sourcing and grid stabilization.

How the funding will be used: With this new funding, florrent plans to hire engineers, technicians, scientists, and operations specialists to support its manufacturing scale-up and product development. The company will also bring on a business development leader to drive commercialization. A new pilot manufacturing facility is set to open in Northampton, Massachusetts in 2026.

KEY QUOTES:

“The need for grid stability is accelerating to an unprecedented scale, driven by the rapid growth of dynamic loads and the wide distribution of energy resources. florrent’s supercapacitor solution is a critical addition to the toolbox that enables better use of existing infrastructure to meet these evolving needs. A defining hallmark of this energy transition will be unlocking new economic opportunities that are shared widely—especially among communities historically marginalized or most impacted by environmental degradation. At florrent, we’re driven to join other companies demonstrating that it is possible to build a profitable business founded on innovative technology that wins on unit economics while contributing to the well-being of people and the planet.”
