Formation Bio has launched a $600 million drug development fund to expand its portfolio of clinical-stage medicines.
The Formation Bio Drug Development Accelerator Fund combines dedicated investment capital with Formation Bio’s clinical development platform and operating infrastructure.
The company expects the fund to support the acquisition of approximately 10 to 15 drug programs over the next three to five years.
Limited partners include research foundations, institutional endowments, hospitals, and philanthropic organizations.
Formation Bio will serve as general partner through a wholly owned subsidiary and is investing its own capital alongside outside limited partners.
Each drug program financed through the fund will be held within a standalone corporate entity.
Formation Bio said this structure keeps the economics of individual drug assets financially separate while allowing the portfolio to share the company’s scientific, clinical, operational, and technology infrastructure.
The company primarily acquires or licenses Phase 1 and Phase 2 drug programs from pharmaceutical and biotechnology businesses.
Formation Bio prioritizes programs with a clear path to clinical proof of concept, particularly in disease areas with significant unmet need and limited active development.
The company generally targets major clinical milestones within two to four years after acquiring a program.
Capital will be deployed based on each asset’s needs and progress, allowing Formation Bio to focus funding on programs it believes offer the strongest opportunities.
Following meaningful clinical progress, Formation Bio expects to pursue commercialization or co-commercialization partnerships with pharmaceutical companies.
The fund is intended to expand the number of medicines Formation Bio can develop without needing separate operating infrastructure for each asset.
Formation Bio is headquartered in New York City and also maintains an office in Boston.
