Epic Games, the game development company known for creating Battle Royale game Fortnite, announced it has set up a $100 million in prize cash for competitive tournaments this year. This is the same amount that Epic Games earmarked last year as well.
A majority of the $100 million will be given to participants of the first Fortnite World Cup competition. And each of the 200 gamers who qualify will receive at least $50,000. And the first place winner is going to receive $3 million.
The Fortnite World Cup is going to be taking place between July 26-July 28 in New York City. Over $30 million total will be given in prizes during that competition. And 100 top solo players and the top 50 duos teams will be invited.
If you are not a Battle Royale player, then Epic Games will be hosting additional events at the Fortnite World Cup Finals featuring custom challenges in different modes and formats.
“We will continue to award $1,000,000 in cash tournaments weekly through the end of this year. These tournaments will feature a wider variety of modes and formats to open up the competitive playing field,” said Epic Games in an announcement. We will also provide tournament tools and prizing to select partners to better serve competitive Fortnite in more countries and regions around the world on our way to awarding the full $100,000,000 in 2019.”
Fortnite is going to be holding weekly open online qualifiers from April 13 to June 16 — which are worth $1 million each. And the gamers who do well during that time could be selected as the top 200 players.
It has been estimated that Fortnite made nearly $2.5 billion in revenue last year and the game is still going strong. Sensor Tower estimates that Fortnite made $500 million in revenue from iOS alone after 326 days on the Apple App Store. This means Fortnite beat Supercell’s Clash Royale by 63 days and Tencent’s Honor of Kings by 79 days.
