Great American Holdings has appointed Joseph Malfitano as President and Head of GA Group’s Retail, Merchant and Industrial Solutions businesses, while longtime executive Scott Carpenter transitions into a Senior Advisor role.
GA Group is majority-owned by funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management and provides financial advisory, valuation, asset disposition, investment banking and lending services.
Malfitano brings more than 25 years of experience advising retail, industrial and commercial companies through restructurings, turnarounds and complex transactions.
His background includes asset acquisitions, monetizations and strategies for both performing and distressed businesses.
GA Group has given Malfitano a mandate to expand both its market presence and service offerings across consumer-facing businesses and industrial asset disposition.
Malfitano previously held senior leadership positions at two global investment and advisory firms and founded Malfitano Partners, a restructuring advisory boutique.
He has worked on major retail restructurings involving Toys “R” Us, Payless ShoeSource, Ascena Retail Group, Brooks Brothers, Gymboree, Bon-Ton Stores, Pier 1 Imports, Charlotte Russe, Eastern Mountain Sports and numerous other brands.
Earlier in his career, Malfitano practiced at Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, advising stakeholders in Chapter 11 cases.
Carpenter will remain involved as Senior Advisor, working with leadership to maintain client relationships, support continuity and help guide the business through its next phase.
