Headquartered in Houston, G&A provides localized support through a national infrastructure of trusted HR experts. Pulse 2.0 interviewed G&A Partners President and CEO John W. Allen to learn more.
John W. Allen’s Background

What is your background and journey like? Allen said:
“After growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, I earned my bachelor’s in accounting and a master’s in management consulting at Brigham Young University. During those years, I served a two-year church mission in Korea, married my junior high school sweetheart, and worked my way through school by teaching Korean and pulling graveyard shifts at 7-Eleven.”
“My professional journey began as a CPA at Grant Thornton in Houston, where I eventually became a Consulting Partner. In the early 1990s, my career shifted after a pivotal lunch meeting with my former colleague, Tony Grijalva. By the end of that meal, we were business partners, forming the Grijalva & Allen behind the name G&A Partners. I was inspired by the idea of “employee leasing,” the precursor to PEOs, from a fascinating presentation at an event we hosted. When the opportunity arose to transition from the accounting world into the human resources management space, we began implementing the strategies that we heard in that presentation.”
“As an early adopter of the co-employment model, we rapidly expanded our services and geographic reach to meet demand from small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs). In 2004, we rebranded to G&A Partners, reflecting our commitment to true partnership with our employees, clients, and vendors. Today, I am proud to say that we continue to deliver world-class HR services, serving more than 5,000 clients and 130,000 employees nationwide.”
Core Products
What are the company’s core products and features? Allen explained:
“Our portfolio of services provides HR support and expertise to businesses in all 50 states. At our core, we provide a comprehensive HR ecosystem through three main service options:
- PEO, our most popular and comprehensive service. It provides full-scale support for payroll, benefits, recruitment, retirement, risk management, and compliance under a co-employment model. Many call this a “hire-to-retire” solution, covering every aspect of HR support.
- ASO (Administrative Services Only), a flexible, a la carte HR outsourcing approach delivering best-in-class service and administrative support without a co-employment relationship.
- HCM (Human Capital Management), a platform designed to manage the full employee lifecycle from recruitment to retirement. This self-service, technology-centric solution simplifies HR processes, boosts efficiency, and ensures compliance, while maintaining access to G&A’s expert-backed support.”
“We’ve also returned to our CPA roots with the acquisition of GrowthForce, an outsourced accounting solution that provides our clients with a dedicated team of experts who handle everything from daily bookkeeping and bill payments to comprehensive financial reporting and analysis.”
“Across all our offerings, client experience is central. For example, all our clients are assigned to a Client Success Manager who ensures that we deliver the services we’ve promised in a timely manner. We also provide our clients with direct access to tenured HR specialists who act as a true extension of their team, answering 88% of calls within 20 seconds.”
“By prioritizing and building long-standing relationships, we ensure that our clients have the strategic support they need to navigate even the most complex HR challenges.”
Future Goals And Vision
What are your future goals and strategic vision? Allen pointed out:
“SMB needs are evolving to keep pace with changing regulations, workforce trends, and economic uncertainty. In this context, G&A’s goals focus on technology, client experience, and better serving our clients where they need us most.
- HR Tech Evolution: We believe technology should be a bridge, not a barrier. And we are making significant investments in our proprietary platform, WorkSight, to ensure our digital experience is as seamless as our personal service. We are reducing complexity by refining the user experience, further integrating AI, and improving automation and analytics. These investments strengthen our ability to deliver high-touch service supported by a high-tech foundation.
- Client Experience (CX): We aren’t satisfied with “satisfied” clients. We’ve built and continue to evolve our world-class CX, reflected in G&A’s industry-leading NPS scores. All employees undergo rigorous CX training and certification, embedding this focus across every team. With an average score of 67 in 2025, G&A’s customer service ranks as exceptional, roughly twice the average score for the HR outsourcing industry.
- Strategic M&A: 2025 was a record-setting year for our M&A strategy with a total of six business acquisitions, bringing 1,268 new clients and 31,150 new employees to the G&A family. With every acquisition, we expanded access to enhanced HR and benefits while maintaining local team — and local client — trust. Moving forward, we will balance organic growth and client retention with strategic acquisitions to expand in key markets.”
Significant Milestones
What are some of the company’s biggest milestones? Allen cited:
“When I reflect on our journey, a few key milestones stand out as defining moments in how we’ve grown and evolved as a company. In 2025, we celebrated our 30-year anniversary, an achievement that underscores how far we’ve come as a company. Our success is built on the dedication of our people and our ability to evolve while staying true to our mission.”
“In the past few years, we have also been honored with recognitions that highlight the strength of our business and culture. Being the only company ever named to Inc.’s list of fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. for 20 consecutive years is a testament to our sustainable growth, strong team, and loyal clients.”
“G&A has also earned the 2025 Management Prism Award for innovative payroll operations along with multiple G2 badges spanning payroll, HR consulting, and benefits. We’ve been named a best workplace by Inc. and listed among the top regional companies by the Houston Chronicle and Houston Business Journal.”
Favorite Memory
What has been your favorite memory so far? Allen reflected:
“It’s hard to pick a single moment, but what stays with me are the stories of the entrepreneurs we’ve supported over my 30+ years in this space.”
“I’ve met thousands of business owners over my career, and seeing a client grow from five employees to 500 and knowing we helped empower their culture and their people during that journey is incredibly rewarding.”
“For me, it’s not just about numbers; it’s about the people and the partners who have become like family.”
Differentiators
What are the G&A differentiators? Allen affirmed:
“What truly sets G&A apart goes beyond our services — it’s how we deliver them. We pride ourselves on a differentiated approach rooted in measurable client satisfaction, a people-first culture, and founder-led leadership.”
“These pillars define how we operate and why clients choose to grow with us.”
“Net Promoter Score (Pulse on audiences) –
People often ask what sets us apart, and I always say, ‘It’s three letters: NPS.’ Our Net Promoter Score is our North Star, reflecting trust, responsiveness, and the strength of our relationships. We don’t just collect feedback. We act on it and continuously improve the client experience.
Our People – Our people-first culture is the foundation of our business. We believe that when you take care of employees, they take care of clients, creating a stronger, more resilient organization. This strategic focus on the employee experience includes a baseline Employee NPS survey, on-site executive leadership presence, mentorship opportunities, career journey mapping, employee resource groups, and transparent and open communication.
Leadership – As one of the few founder-led companies in our industry, we understand the needs of growing businesses because that’s how we started. Our leadership team brings decades of industry expertise that continues to guide our long-term growth. We’ve spent 30+ years helping our clients achieve their dreams, and that experience is something you just can’t replicate overnight.”
