Georgia Tech And Emory Invest More Than $1 Billion In Artificial Intelligence

Georgia Tech and Emory University are collectively investing more than $1 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure, research, talent, and applications as part of an effort to establish Atlanta as a leading U.S. AI hub.

The combined commitment includes approximately $600 million from Emory and more than $575 million from Georgia Tech.

The universities said the investment is intended to strengthen Georgia’s ability to attract businesses, skilled workers, private investment, and federal research funding.

Georgia Tech is concentrating its investments on advanced computing, AI research, and workforce development.

Emory’s investments focus on AI talent, healthcare applications, and the use of the technology across medicine, business, law, humanities, and ethics.

The institutions also plan to collaborate on research, industry partnerships, technology commercialization, and talent development.

Georgia Tech’s infrastructure investments include advanced computing capacity in Tech Square, a campus-wide computing platform, and Nexus, a new AI supercomputer.

The computing infrastructure is being supported by Georgia Tech, industry partners, and the National Science Foundation.

Georgia Tech’s AI Makerspace currently provides hands-on AI experience to more than 6,000 students annually.

At Emory, nearly half of its roughly $600 million investment has been directed toward recruiting and retaining AI-related faculty and other experts.

Emory’s AI.Humanity initiative now includes more than 250 faculty members across eight schools and colleges.

Emory Healthcare is already using AI in clinical care, while the university’s AI.Health institute is applying the technology to cancer, kidney disease, and other healthcare challenges.

That work has contributed to three spinoff companies and 40 licensed technologies.

Georgia Tech also operates several NSF-supported AI institutes and its Tech AI initiative, which connects academic researchers with industry and government partners.

The universities are extending their AI efforts beyond campus through workforce development programs.

Georgia Tech leads Georgia AIM, a statewide advanced manufacturing initiative backed by nearly $100 million in federal, state, and private support.

Emory operates AI + You Georgia, which provides free AI education and workforce training to communities across the state.

The broader strategy aligns with Atlanta’s goal of becoming a top-five technology and entrepreneurship market and a national center for applied AI.
