GitHub Launches Copilot App To Bring Agent-Native Development To The Desktop

GitHub unveiled the GitHub Copilot app, a new desktop experience designed around AI agents that can work alongside developers across the entire software development lifecycle. Announced at Microsoft Build 2026, the application introduces a centralized environment where developers can launch, monitor, and guide multiple AI-powered coding agents while maintaining visibility into their work.

The Copilot app is designed to support what GitHub describes as “agentic development,” enabling developers to start work from GitHub issues, pull requests, prompts, or previous sessions while keeping tasks isolated and manageable. The platform allows agents to operate within separate workspaces, helping developers coordinate complex workflows without disrupting active projects.

A key feature of the application is its ability to manage multiple AI agents simultaneously. Developers can view plans, pull requests, browser sessions, terminals, deployments, and other project activities in a unified interface rather than tracking progress through separate chat windows. GitHub said the experience is intended to provide greater transparency and control as AI agents take on increasingly autonomous development tasks.

The launch reflects GitHub’s broader shift from AI-powered coding assistance toward AI-powered software execution. Rather than simply suggesting code, agents within the Copilot app can perform tasks, monitor progress, respond to errors, and support end-to-end development workflows. The app also integrates with GitHub’s existing ecosystem, allowing developers to review and merge changes through established pull request processes.

GitHub first introduced the Copilot app in technical preview during May 2026, describing it as a GitHub-native desktop environment that allows developers to begin agentic development from the work already in front of them and guide AI agents through the software delivery process. The latest release expands on that vision as part of GitHub’s continued investment in AI-driven development tools.

The introduction of the Copilot app comes as AI agents become a central theme across Microsoft’s developer ecosystem. GitHub’s new desktop experience is intended to help engineering teams manage increasingly sophisticated AI workflows while maintaining oversight, security, and collaboration across software projects.
