Golub Capital has appointed Matt Shafer Managing Director and Head of Golub Equity Continuation Partners, putting the veteran private equity investor in charge of the firm’s growing GP-led secondaries strategy.
Shafer will lead the continued development of GECP and help expand Golub Capital’s equity investment capabilities.
He will work closely with Vice Chair and Sponsor Finance Co-Head Greg Cashman as the firm increases its activity in continuation vehicles and other GP-led transactions.
Shafer brings nearly three decades of experience working with private equity sponsors as an investor, financier and adviser.
He most recently served as Head of Capital Solutions and U.S. Private Equity at Northleaf Capital Partners, helping lead investments across secondaries, co-investments and structured capital.
Earlier, he was Partner and Head of Americas Private Equity at Vision Capital and spent 12 years in sponsor-focused investment banking roles at CIBC World Markets and Lehman Brothers.
Golub launched Equity Continuation Partners in October 2025.
The strategy focuses on continuation vehicles and related investments that allow private equity firms to maintain ownership of high-quality portfolio companies while providing liquidity alternatives for existing limited partners.
Golub believes its long-standing sponsor relationships and experience underwriting private equity-backed companies provide a differentiated foundation for the strategy.
The firm had more than 1,100 employees and over $90 billion of capital under management as of July 1, 2026.
