Google announced a major expansion of its global digital infrastructure with the launch of the America-India Connect initiative, a program designed to strengthen fiber-optic and subsea connectivity between the United States, India, and regions across the Southern Hemisphere. The initiative builds on the company’s previously announced five-year, 15 billion AI infrastructure investment in India and aims to increase the reach, reliability, and resilience of global digital networks.
As part of the initiative, Google will help establish a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam, India, positioning the city as a key landing point for global connectivity. The project also includes three new subsea paths connecting India to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia, along with four strategic terrestrial fiber-optic routes to enhance network capacity between the U.S., India, and additional markets in the Southern Hemisphere.
The company said the new infrastructure will create diversified routes that improve redundancy and performance for cloud and AI workloads. Planned routes include fiber connectivity from Visakhapatnam to Chennai and onward to South Africa, links from Visakhapatnam to Singapore forming a South Pacific pathway through Australia, and a direct fiber route between Mumbai and Western Australia. These systems will integrate with existing subsea cable investments to create more resilient global data corridors.
Google said the initiative is intended to support growing demand for AI and cloud services while helping prevent a widening digital divide. By expanding international bandwidth and improving geographic diversity of cable landings, the company aims to ensure broader access to advanced digital tools and economic opportunities tied to AI innovation.
The America-India Connect program is part of Google’s broader strategy to invest in global infrastructure that supports AI-driven growth, strengthens international connectivity, and expands digital access across emerging and established markets alike.
