Google is expanding Gemini’s capabilities in vehicles by rolling out Personal Intelligence for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, giving drivers access to more personalized, context-aware assistance while keeping their hands on the wheel.
Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and in vehicles featuring Google built-in. Personal Intelligence is beginning its rollout on Android Auto, with availability in cars with Google built-in expected to expand over the coming months.
The feature allows Gemini, with a user’s permission, to securely connect information across Google services including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Search. By drawing from information already stored across these services, Gemini can provide responses tailored to an individual user rather than relying only on general information.
Google said Personal Intelligence is designed around two primary capabilities: retrieving specific information from connected sources and reasoning across multiple sources to answer more complex requests.
For example, a driver heading to the airport can ask Gemini for a flight gate and whether the flight is on time without manually finding a confirmation email and separately searching for the flight’s status. Users can also ask Gemini to find restaurants along a route that match their preferences or navigate to an appointment without providing the address.
The system can also retrieve information from Google Photos. A driver could ask Gemini to identify a car wash appearing in a previously taken photo and navigate there. Gemini can similarly use prior conversations and contextual information to help drivers resume earlier tasks, such as navigating to a coffee shop discussed the previous day.
Google emphasized that Personal Intelligence is opt-in. Users choose which supported Google apps Gemini can access and can disable the connections through Gemini settings at any time.
For vehicles with Google built-in, personalized responses are provided only when the user is in the vehicle with their phone connected. Drivers who choose not to enable Personal Intelligence can continue using Gemini and existing vehicle functions for navigation, music, calls, and general questions, but responses will not incorporate their connected personal information.
Users who have already activated Personal Intelligence through the Gemini app will have those preferences carry over to supported vehicle experiences.
Personal Intelligence is initially available to eligible personal Google accounts for users age 18 and older. The rollout excludes Workspace business, enterprise, and education accounts and is not currently available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or Nigeria.
