Google Chromecast (3rd Generation) Features: What You Need To Know

By Dan Anderson ● Oct 10, 2018

At the Made By Google event, Google revealed its third-generation Chromecast device — which is simply just being referred to as Google Chromecast.

Google Chromecast product manager Jess Bonner pointed out that the new Chromecast has a new design and comes in two colors: Chalk and Charcoal. Google’s “G” logo is also embedded in the design. The design also still looks like a hockey puck and it connects to TVs through HDMI. And it still uses microUSB for power.

“We launched our first Chromecast in 2013 with the aim to make it easy to get your favorite content right from your phone to your TV. With thousands of compatible apps to cast from, people are tapping the Cast button more than ever,” said Bonner.

In terms of performance, the new Chromecast has a 15% improvement in speed. And it supports smooth streaming at in 1080p at 60 frames per second. The previous version of the Chromecast supported 720p.

The Chromecast and Google Home are connected to each other so you can say “Hey Google, play ‘Arrested Development’ from Netflix.” And it supports the new Live Albums feature from Google Photos so that you can watch a constantly updating stream of the photos of the people and pets that you add to the photo storage service.

And the new Chromecast also works just like Chromecast Audio so you can play music in sync with other speakers in your home. But this feature will not be available until next year.

The retail price of the new Chromecast is $35 and it is available from the Google Store now in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, and the U.S.

Note: this version does not support 4K so you will have to buy a Chromecast Ultra for much higher-quality video.
