Google Cloud Introduces Gemini Agent As Universal AI Agent For Work

Google Cloud introduced the Gemini agent, a universal enterprise AI agent that answers questions, completes knowledge work, creates content, generates media, and writes and executes code from a single interface.

Google unveiled the technology at Gemini at Work 2026 as part of a broader expansion of its enterprise AI platform.

The Gemini agent is designed around objectives rather than individual instructions, allowing users to delegate an outcome and have the system plan and execute the necessary steps.

It can operate as a personal assistant, work on behalf of a team, or take on a persistent organizational role.

Gemini can run scheduled tasks, react to events, and continue executing jobs in the cloud for hours or days even when the user’s device is offline.

The system can also create temporary specialized sub-agents and coordinate them through parallel or sequential workflows.

Persistent “coworker agents” can receive their own identities, storage, and organizational roles.

Gemini integrates directly with Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat, and Calendar and can connect to third-party platforms including Microsoft Office, Teams, Slack, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, Snowflake, Databricks, and other enterprise systems.

The agent maintains session, semantic, procedural, and episodic memory to build context around users, teams, workflows, and previous activity.

Google is also separating the agent experience from the underlying model.

Gemini can route jobs across Google’s Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models, with additional private and open models expected to be supported over time.

Security features include dedicated agent identities, role-based permissions, audit trails, secure agent sandboxes, and an Agent Gateway that applies network and policy controls to agent activity.

Google said nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers now use its AI products and nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise.

Several enterprise customers are already deploying agents at scale, including Orange Spain, which has created more than 1,000 custom agents, and SOMPO, which has built more than 10,000.
