Google DeepMind announced a major expansion for Project Genie, its experimental world model platform, by integrating Google Street View imagery into the experience, allowing users to generate interactive virtual environments grounded in real-world locations.
Project Genie is designed as a general-purpose world model capable of creating diverse and interactive environments that AI agents and robots can navigate. Since its original launch, the platform has been used in research applications, including helping autonomous driving company Waymo simulate highly realistic road environments.
The new capability connects Genie’s generative AI technology with Street View imagery, enabling users to create imaginative worlds based on actual places. Users can select a location in the U.S. through a Maps pin interface and apply creative visual themes such as “Ocean World,” “Desert Sands,” “Stone Age,” or “B&W film.”
According to Google, users can reimagine famous locations with entirely different environments and aesthetics. Examples highlighted by the company include transforming the Golden Gate Bridge into an underwater setting filled with schools of fish using the “Ocean World” style, or recreating the Fort Worth Stockyards as a 1920s-era black-and-white cinematic world featuring saloons, vintage cars and trading posts.
The company said the feature is powered by “Maps Imagery Grounding,” the same underlying technology developers use to generate AI visuals using Street View imagery.
Google also announced that Project Genie access is expanding globally to eligible subscribers of Google AI Ultra, the company’s $200-per-month AI subscription tier. The rollout, including the new Street View grounding functionality, is beginning for users age 18 and older.
At launch, Street View grounding within Project Genie is limited to U.S. locations, although Google said additional geographic expansion is planned over time.
Google emphasized that Project Genie remains an experimental research prototype within Google Labs and noted that the company continues refining the system to improve accuracy and visual fidelity.
