Google DeepMind has appointed Jasjeet Sekhon as Chief Strategy Officer, marking a significant leadership addition as the company intensifies its efforts to advance artificial general intelligence and scale its impact across research, commercialization, and policy.

Sekhon joins from Bridgewater Associates, where he served as Chief Scientist and Head of AI, playing a central role in building the firm’s AIA Labs research unit. As part of the transition, he will also join Bridgewater’s board after stepping away from his operational responsibilities.

The appointment reflects Google DeepMind’s increasing focus on aligning its technical breakthroughs with broader strategic, regulatory, and commercial considerations as competition in the AI sector accelerates.

In his new role, Sekhon will work closely with DeepMind leadership on cross-functional strategy, spanning scientific research, product development, and policy engagement. His background in applying AI at scale within one of the world’s largest hedge funds positions him to contribute to the next phase of DeepMind’s evolution.

The move comes as Google expands its AI capabilities through major product releases, including its Gemini models and a growing suite of AI-powered tools, as it competes with leading players such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

DeepMind’s leadership emphasized that developing artificial general intelligence carries both transformative potential and significant complexity, requiring careful stewardship as the technology advances.

KEY QUOTE:

“We started DeepMind back in 2010 because even then we believed Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) would be the most transformative technology ever invented. It has the potential to be the ultimate tool to accelerate science and medicine, and improve productivity. The impact will be profound, but the challenges and complexities are also enormous. Thoughtfulness and foresight will be critical as we seek to steward this technology safely into the world to benefit everyone. As part of our contribution to that effort, I’m thrilled to welcome Jasjeet Sekhon to Google DeepMind as Chief Strategy Officer to partner with me on strategy cutting across research, commercialisation, policy and more. Jas is uniquely experienced for this role, having served as Chief Scientist and Head of AI at Bridgewater Associates, where he now joins the board. Super excited to be working with Jas to accelerate this important work at such a critical time for this technology.”
