Google announced an expansion of its skilled trades initiatives, committing an additional $50 million through Google.org to help prepare more than 300,000 workers across more than 20 states for high-demand careers.
The initiative is designed to address labor shortages across critical infrastructure sectors, including electrical work, construction, plumbing, welding, heating and cooling systems, and sheet metal fabrication. According to Google, hundreds of thousands of skilled trade positions remain open across the United States.
The new funding will support 14 labor unions and four trade and contractor associations, building on Google’s previous efforts to help train electrical workers and manufacturing employees with AI-related skills. Since 2022, Google has committed more than $1 billion globally to training and workforce development initiatives, helping over 100 million people gain digital and artificial intelligence skills.
Among the organizations receiving support is TradesFutures, which was created by North America’s Building Trades Unions and industry partners. The organization will expand apprenticeship readiness programs and incorporate AI tools to improve graduate placement into registered apprenticeships.
The electrical training ALLIANCE, formed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association, will provide additional resources to local training programs through a mobile training center pilot aimed at serving high-demand infrastructure regions.
Google is also supporting the United Association’s International Training Fund, which works with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. The effort will create a five-year roadmap for scaling workforce development across plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, pipefitting, and welding sectors.
In addition, the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry, backed by SMART Workers and SMACNA, will modernize coursework, strengthen apprentice support programs, and implement new AI tools to help address shortages in the sheet metal workforce.
Google said the effort reflects the need for collaboration between industry, government, and civil society to expand apprenticeship programs and modernize workforce training.
KEY QUOTES:
“Building and maintaining the infrastructure for America’s future requires a massive, coordinated workforce of skilled tradespeople, from the welders and pipefitters securing complex cooling systems, to the electricians and fiber technicians powering advanced network grids. These jobs offer high-wage careers that can support local communities. There are hundreds of thousands of skilled trade roles currently open across the U.S waiting to be filled.”
“No single entity can solve this American workforce shortage on its own. There needs to be engagement across industry, civil society and government, so we can build modern on-the-job training and expand apprenticeships together. By supporting the training experts and trade organizations who keep America running, we’re helping build a public-private model to prepare the next generation of American builders.”
Maggie Johnson, Global Head of Google.org
