Google is exploring development of a new data center in Lea County, New Mexico, potentially adding another U.S. location to the technology company’s expanding infrastructure network supporting cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
The company said discussions surrounding the project remain ongoing and that many details have not yet been determined.
Google disclosed the potential development early in the process as it begins engaging with the Lea County community about the project.
The company has not yet announced the size of the planned facility, its expected investment, construction timeline, computing capacity or potential employment levels.
Google did outline several commitments it intends to follow if the project advances.
The company said it would responsibly manage local water resources and pay for 100% of the energy it consumes and infrastructure it requires.
Google also said it intends to operate as a long-term community partner in Lea County rather than treating the development solely as an infrastructure project.
Data centers form the physical foundation of Google’s services, including Google Cloud and the computing infrastructure increasingly required to develop and operate AI systems.
Large technology companies have been expanding data center capacity as AI models and cloud workloads drive demand for computing power, electricity and supporting infrastructure.
For now, Google’s Lea County project remains exploratory.
The company said it expects to provide additional details as discussions progress.
