  • This year, Google Fiber is going to double the maximum Internet speed it offers to customers from 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps. This plan will cost $100 per month.

This year, Google Fiber — which is part of the Access division of Alphabet — (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is going to double the maximum Internet speed it offers to customers from 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps, according to a company blog post. This plan is going to cost $100 per month, which is $30 more than the 1 Gbps plan.

It’s worth mentioning that while the download speeds will be double, the upload speeds will continue to be 1 Gbps. And through the new plan, Going is going to provide customers with an unspecified new Wi-Fi 6 router and mesh extender in order to optimize the new speeds.

The pilots for the new service will begin in Nashville, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama next month. And a wider rollout will be occurring in the two cities later this year.

Google Fiber and Google Fiber Webpass (over-the-air instead of fiber optic cables) is currently available in 19 cities in the US. And the 2 Gbps pilots will be due to launch in several other markets later this year with a planned wider rollout to most cities in early 2021.
