Google Renames NotebookLM As Gemini Notebook And Adds Native Code Execution

Google is renaming NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, marking the next phase for the AI-powered research and learning product that was first introduced at Google I/O 2023 as Project Tailwind.

The product will remain a standalone research tool, but Google said it will now work more broadly across the Google ecosystem. This includes availability inside the Gemini app and, soon, integration with AI Mode in Google Search.

Since its launch, NotebookLM has grown to more than 30 million users and over 600,000 organizations. Google said people are using the product for a wide range of workflows, from business owners creating interactive onboarding materials to students converting notes into audio and video summaries.

As part of the rebrand, Google is also introducing under-the-hood upgrades designed to make Gemini Notebook more accurate and powerful. The company has started rolling out an update that gives every notebook a secure cloud computer.

This cloud computer enables Gemini Notebook to write and execute code natively. Google said the capability can help users conduct complex data analysis that remains grounded in their sources.

The feature is available today for Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google plans to roll it out to all Pro users on the web over the coming weeks.

Google said native code execution will enable new output formats and deeper analysis. This could expand Gemini Notebook’s usefulness for research, data-heavy workflows, and projects that require more than summarization or note organization.

Google is also making notebooks more portable across its products. Users can already access and create notebooks directly within the Gemini app, with full cross-app syncing between the Gemini app and the standalone Gemini Notebook experience.

The company said notebooks will soon be available directly in AI Mode in Search. This will allow users to bring notebook-based research workflows closer to how they search, explore, and build understanding across Google’s ecosystem.

The move reflects Google’s broader effort to make Gemini Notebook a more central research layer across its AI products. By combining source-grounded research, native code execution, app syncing, and future Search integration, Google is positioning Gemini Notebook as a more capable tool for learning, analysis, and knowledge work.
