Google announced that Gemini-powered navigation is rolling out in Google Maps, bringing a hands-free, conversational experience that lets users interact with the navigation system while driving.
The update integrates Google’s Gemini AI model directly into the navigation experience, enabling drivers to ask questions and complete tasks through natural language. By combining Gemini’s conversational capabilities with Google Maps’ real-world location data, the company says the system can help users accomplish tasks more easily without needing to manually interact with the app.
According to Google, the feature allows drivers to handle multi-step tasks during navigation. Users can ask the system to locate places along their route, check EV charger availability, add events from their calendar, or report traffic disruptions using voice commands.
The company said the goal is to create a more seamless driving experience by allowing users to simply speak their requests rather than manually navigate menus or type on their devices. The feature relies on the underlying data within Google Maps to provide relevant information about nearby businesses, locations, and road conditions.
Gemini-powered navigation will roll out in Google Maps on both Android and iOS devices in regions where Gemini is available. Google also indicated that Android Auto support is planned as part of the rollout.
The update is part of Google’s broader effort to integrate its Gemini AI technology across its products and services, bringing conversational AI capabilities into widely used consumer applications.
