Google has announced plans to establish India’s first artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking one of the company’s most significant global infrastructure investments to date. The initiative represents a $15 billion commitment over five years (2026–2030) and aligns with India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision to accelerate the nation’s AI-driven digital transformation.
The new AI hub will unite Google’s full AI stack—including infrastructure, data center capacity, large-scale clean energy generation, and an expanded fiber-optic network—to support AI research, development, and enterprise adoption at scale. The company expects the facility to become a cornerstone of India’s growing digital economy while deepening U.S.–India technological cooperation in the AI era.
An analysis by Access Partnership, commissioned by Google, projects that this AI hub will generate at least $15 billion (USD) in American GDP between 2026 and 2030 due to increased cloud and AI-related economic activity. The initiative will also stimulate collaboration between Indian and American talent, furthering bilateral growth in technology and innovation.
The announcement was made during Bharat AI Shakti, a pre-event to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, hosted by Google in New Delhi. Distinguished attendees included key government and industry leaders such as Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology; Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs; Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh; Shri Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Information Technology; and Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.
The Visakhapatnam AI hub will include a purpose-built data center campus with gigawatt-scale compute capacity, designed to meet India’s surging digital demands. Developed in partnership with AdaniConneX and Airtel, the facility will employ the same state-of-the-art infrastructure that powers Google’s core products such as Search, Workspace, and YouTube. And it will enable businesses to develop, deploy, and scale AI-driven applications and research initiatives, positioning India as a major player in the global AI landscape.
The hub will also integrate into Google’s network of AI data centers across 12 countries, supported by ongoing research and development from Google’s Indian engineering teams in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.
A key component of the initiative is the construction of a new international subsea gateway, landing multiple undersea cables in Visakhapatnam to connect with Google’s two million miles of existing terrestrial and subsea networks. This infrastructure will enhance India’s digital connectivity and provide new low-latency pathways to support the growing demand for AI and cloud services.
The gateway will complement existing cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai while strengthening India’s overall digital backbone. By improving capacity, speed, and route diversity, Google aims to promote digital inclusion and ensure that AI benefits reach individuals and businesses across India.
In addition to connectivity, Google’s investment will support clean energy and grid resilience in Andhra Pradesh. The company plans to partner with local energy developers to expand renewable generation, build new transmission lines, and deploy energy storage systems to power the data center sustainably. This initiative builds on Google’s broader commitment to operating the world’s most energy-efficient data centers and to advancing carbon-free energy in emerging markets.
Through this landmark investment, Google seeks to reinforce its mission to make the world’s information universally accessible and useful while enabling India’s next phase of technological progress. The AI hub is expected to drive innovation, empower businesses, and create new economic opportunities for millions of people in India and beyond.
