Google DeepMind announced a strategic partnership with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT to accelerate AI-driven scientific research, support national innovation, and expand talent development.

The collaboration is part of Google DeepMind’s National Partnerships for AI initiative and aims to strengthen Korea’s position as a global leader in artificial intelligence. The partnership will focus on advancing research across key domains including life sciences, energy, weather, and climate, while supporting the country’s broader AI strategy and economic development goals.

As part of the initiative, Google will establish an AI Campus in Seoul, designed as a collaborative hub where Korean researchers and academic institutions can work alongside Google DeepMind experts. The facility will provide access to advanced AI models and tools to accelerate scientific discovery and improve research productivity.

Initial collaborations are expected to include leading institutions such as Seoul National University, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and government-backed AI Bio Innovation Hubs. The partnership will leverage several of Google DeepMind’s frontier AI systems, including AlphaFold for protein structure prediction, AlphaGenome for genomic analysis, AlphaEvolve for algorithm design, AI co-scientist systems for hypothesis generation, and WeatherNext for climate and energy modeling.

The initiative builds on Korea’s growing role in AI, where adoption rates and innovation density rank among the highest globally. It also aligns with national programs such as the K-Moonshot Missions, which aim to drive breakthroughs in research and address large-scale societal challenges.

Beyond research, the partnership includes efforts to cultivate AI talent through training programs and potential internship opportunities, as well as continued collaboration on AI safety. Google DeepMind will work with the Korean AI Safety Institute to develop best practices and advance responsible AI deployment.

The announcement also reflects the legacy of AlphaGo, whose landmark match in Seoul a decade ago demonstrated the transformative potential of AI and helped catalyze global interest in the field. The new partnership is positioned as a continuation of that momentum, focused on applying AI to real-world scientific challenges and long-term societal benefit.
