GreaterThan Group, a new video game company founded by games industry veteran Simon Zhu, has launched with a mission to build, empower, and fund elite creative studios to develop what it describes as unforgettable interactive experiences. The Los Angeles-based company has already partnered with three founding studios led by prominent industry figures: Arcanaut Studios in Edmonton, led by Casey Hudson; BulletFarm in Los Angeles, led by David Vonderhaar; and MAGship in Tokyo, led by Masato Sakai.
GTG’s model is built around providing studios with full funding, end-to-end support, and creative autonomy, allowing studio leadership to focus on game development rather than administrative and business distractions. Portfolio studios are co-owned by GTG and each studio’s founding team, giving studio leadership ownership in their individual studio as well as shared equity in GTG, aligning incentives across the portfolio. The company said it is also actively working with additional world-class creators to incubate further projects beyond its existing portfolio.
Arcanaut Studios, led by Hudson, the game director behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, announced its debut title Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards 2025. Created in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, the title is a narrative-driven single-player action RPG set in a galaxy on the edge of rebirth. BulletFarm is led by Vonderhaar, former studio design director at Treyarch and a key creative force behind the Call of Duty: Black Ops franchise, with its first project yet to be revealed. MAGship, led by Sakai, a former Konami executive who helped develop Yu-Gi-Oh! into a global phenomenon, invests in Japanese anime projects that form a core pillar of GTG’s overall intellectual property strategy.
Zhu has spent more than a decade as a driving force in the global gaming industry, having led investments or provided support to nearly 100 studios worldwide. His track record includes backing thatgamecompany’s Sky: Children of the Light, Quantic Dream’s Star Wars: Eclipse, Second Dinner’s MARVEL SNAP, and teams including Bungie, Behaviour Interactive, Devolver Digital, and Niantic, as well as notable indie successes including Fall Guys, Royal Match, Spiritfarer, and Dispatch. GTG said it was founded to apply those lessons toward a new model of game development that puts creative talent first.
KEY QUOTES:
“GTG is bringing common sense back to the games industry. We’re refocusing on the fundamentals: gaming is first and foremost entertainment — our job is to give players what they truly want. Great games have always come from the authentic self-expression of their talented creators. Making good games has become increasingly challenging in the modern era of game development. Our role is to create the right conditions for creators to work on their dream projects, so they can devote the vast majority of their time and energy building their game, free from unnecessary distractions. That’s the proven formula behind most of the greatest games ever made.”
