Matt Taylor’s Background

Tell us about yourself and your role at Guardian Payroll Services. Taylor said:
“I started my career as an employee benefits broker over 20 years ago. After the Affordable Care Act was passed, the market became commoditized, and I wanted to find new ways to solve business owners’ biggest pain points. I’ve always had a passion for HR technology, automation, and improving the employee lifecycle. From PTO management to onboarding to benefits enrollment.”
“I also kept hearing frustrations about payroll providers; long wait times, offshore support, and no real relationship with the client. In payroll, nothing’s wrong until it is, and when it is, you need someone you trust to fix it fast. That missing relationship piece motivated me to enter the payroll and human capital management space.”
“My role today is simply: whatever it takes! That means guiding the company’s vision, jumping on sales calls, consulting with clients on automation and process improvements, and maximizing they get the most out of partnering with us.”
The Why Now?
Is there anything else from a business perspective—why this, why now? Taylor shared:
“The ‘why’ comes down to the fact that no one at scale has truly solved the payroll and human capital management industry. Yes, there are plenty of companies with systems, and plenty that process payroll but I haven’t seen one that combines that with a genuine people-first approach. Too often, it’s a vendor relationship, not a partner relationship. We’re focused on long-term partnerships 10, 15 years not just selling a deal and moving on. Walking the walk means delivering service, value, and connection in a way that builds trust and longevity. That’s what employers deserve, and I believe we can solve that at scale.”
Favorite Memory
Do you have a favorite memory so far? Taylor reflected:
“The best memories are about the people we’ve brought on, seeing new team members embrace our people-first philosophy and align with our vision. It creates momentum, gets everyone thinking the same way, and produces the type of work we want to put into the world. That alignment and shared energy are really exciting.”
Core Products
What are the company’s core products and features? Taylor explained:
“We’re a human capital management and payroll provider, but more than that, we’re strategic business advisors. Our role extends beyond payroll processing, we help clients integrate systems, automate processes, and streamline data flow. Whether it’s changing a workers’ comp policy, integrating a new 401(k) provider, or connecting tools like mileage tracking software, we help businesses work more efficiently. And, of course, customer service is central to being a true partner.”
Significant Milestones
Any significant milestones so far? Taylor cited:
“Our first SHRM event in San Diego this past June stands out. It was our first time really out in the world, sharing our message face-to-face. The positive feedback we received about our approach and our vision was incredibly rewarding.”
Differentiation From The Competition
What differentiates your company from the competition? Taylor affirmed:
“It’s our people and our mindset. No system will ever be perfect; there will always be features you love and others you wish were different, and you often don’t discover the gaps until you’re using it. Where we stand out is in how we respond to those gaps. Instead of saying, ‘The system doesn’t do that, sorry,’ we ask, ‘What’s the outcome you’re looking for, and how can we figure that out?’ We’re committed to finding creative solutions and making the technology work for our clients, not just leaving them to work around its limitations.”
