Hamilton Lane announced that its Board of Directors elected Michael Schmertzler as a new independent director, effective July 22, 2026, marking the fifth independent director named to the board alongside the firm’s three executive directors.
Schmertzler brings extensive investment, corporate finance, and governance experience to the role. Since 1998, he has served as a Lecturer and Adjunct Professor at Yale University’s Department of Economics and School of Management, and from 2018 to 2025 he was also a Visiting Professor at Yale-NUS College Singapore. He currently serves as Chairman and director of PTC Therapeutics, Chairman and director of Berryville Holdings and Dispel, LLC, and Executive Chairman of SHY Therapeutics, in addition to serving as a director of AgNovos. His earlier career included serving as a post-bankruptcy independent director of Lehman Commercial Paper from 2012 to 2020, as Managing Director and Chair of the Investment Committee at Credit Suisse First Boston Equity Partners from 1997 to 2014, and as Managing Director and President of Morgan Stanley Leveraged Capital Funds at Morgan Stanley.
Hamilton Lane manages $1 trillion in assets under management and supervision, comprising $141.8 billion in discretionary assets and $905.3 billion in non-discretionary assets as of March 31, 2026, and employs approximately 785 professionals across offices in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East.
