Stores.com announced it has acquired Hammacher Schlemmer, a 178-year-old retail brand historically known for introducing innovative consumer products to the U.S. market. The acquisition is led by a leadership team that previously built and operated Woot.com, signaling a renewed focus on product discovery and experiential retail rather than discount-driven commerce.
The new ownership team, led by Stores.com CEO Matt Rutledge, aims to restore Hammacher Schlemmer’s reputation as a destination for unique and cutting-edge products. The brand was once instrumental in bringing technologies such as the pop-up toaster, microwave oven, electric blender, Mr. Coffee machine, electric toothbrush, and cordless phone into American homes, particularly during its peak from the 1930s through the 1980s.
Rutledge and his team bring experience from early ecommerce innovation through Woot.com, which helped popularize the daily deals model before being acquired by Amazon in 2012. Following their exit, the team regrouped under Stores.com and continued operating ecommerce ventures such as Meh.
Despite their background in deal-driven retail, the new leadership emphasized that Hammacher Schlemmer will not pivot toward discounting. Instead, the focus will be on curating distinctive, high-quality products that align with the brand’s long-standing identity centered on discovery and novelty.
A central element of the brand’s heritage, its Lifetime Guarantee of Satisfaction, will remain intact under the new ownership. The leadership views this policy as a differentiator in an e-commerce landscape increasingly shaped by algorithmic merchandising and stricter return policies.
The updated Hammacher Schlemmer platform is now live, with additional changes and strategic updates expected as the new team modernizes the brand while preserving its legacy positioning.
KEY QUOTES:
“Every Christmas season, there was one catalog I couldn’t wait to get my hands on: Hammacher Schlemmer. Now it just blows my mind that I’ve got the keys to the brand. And I can finally score one of those little ride-on trains! We’re revitalizing a revered brand known for ‘The Best, the Only, and the Unexpected’ with a team known for ‘The Mediocre, the Cheap, and the Irreverent’. What’s crazy is, I think we might just be the right people to do it.”
“In an algorithmized, commoditized, throwaway era, when most retailers are nickel-and-diming customers on return policies, a Lifetime Guarantee of Satisfaction borders on absurd in the best possible way. We’re keeping that promise alive. If future generations are going to understand what great service feels like, someone has to keep saying ‘we’ll make it right’ long after everyone else has moved on.”
Matt Rutledge, CEO of Stores.com and Founder and Former CEO of Woot.com
