Harlem Children’s Zone Acquires Goalsetter To Expand Financial Education And Economic Mobility Programs Nationwide

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ), a New York-based nonprofit organization focused on addressing poverty and expanding educational opportunities, has acquired Goalsetter, a financial technology platform that provides financial education tools for students and adults. The acquisition will support HCZ’s strategy to expand financial literacy, improve access to economic opportunities, and help families build long-term financial security.

The transaction represents a significant component of HCZ’s Wealth Builds–Universal Economic Mobility initiative, a national framework designed to strengthen economic mobility through educational support, financial knowledge, and access to capital.

Under the initiative, HCZ aims to combine its established cradle-to-career support model with financial education and a Child Capital Stack, a framework of asset-building contributions intended to help children and families develop greater financial stability.

Founded as a community-based initiative in Central Harlem, HCZ has expanded from an initial one-block pilot program to serving an area covering more than 100 blocks. The organization now works with more than 70 communities throughout the United States, applying its experience in education, family support, and community development.

The acquisition of Goalsetter provides HCZ with an established technology platform for delivering financial education to a broader audience, including underserved and rural communities that have historically faced limited access to financial learning resources.

Goalsetter’s existing products include Goalsetter Classroom, which provides standards-aligned financial education curricula for middle and high school students.

The platform also offers MoneyLingo, a mobile-first financial education experience designed for college students and working adults. Its curriculum addresses practical financial topics such as saving, investing, managing credit, understanding debt, and making informed financial decisions.

These products are designed to provide financial education that is age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and accessible across different learning environments.

HCZ plans to expand Goalsetter’s capabilities by exploring products for younger students, potentially establishing a continuous financial learning experience spanning early childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

The organization also expects to use technology and artificial intelligence to expand program delivery, improve operational efficiency, and reach additional communities.

Goalsetter founder Tanya Van Court will serve as Chief FinTech Officer at Harlem Children’s Zone, supporting the integration and continued development of the platform.

The acquisition reflects HCZ’s broader approach to addressing economic mobility as a multigenerational challenge. By connecting financial education with family engagement and access to capital, the organization aims to help households develop the knowledge and resources necessary for long-term financial progress.

The combination also demonstrates how nonprofit organizations can acquire and operate technology platforms to expand the scale of their services.

HCZ confirmed that services to existing Goalsetter clients will continue without interruption following the acquisition.

KEY QUOTES:

“We know that economic mobility is a two-generation challenge. With this acquisition, we are solving for a critical component of Universal Economic Mobility by melding a proven financial education platform and HCZ’s decades of experience providing people with the knowledge and tools to build strong futures for themselves and their families. This is more than an investment in financial education. It is an investment in critical national infrastructure for economic mobility.

This acquisition sends an important signal to the field. Social impact organizations should not have to choose between mission and scale. By bringing a proven technology platform into HCZ, we’re demonstrating how non-profit organizations can be centers of business excellence, using vehicles of innovation, AI, and technology to create efficient and effective pathways to scale and impact. This acquisition strengthens our in-house capacity to build, innovate, and continuously improve outcomes.

This is ultimately about extending opportunity to all. By connecting financial education, technology, family engagement, and access to assets, we can help create more accessible pathways to economic mobility.”
