Harness announced the acquisition of select Augment Code assets, including Cosmos, Auggie CLI, the Code Context Engine, and related technology, as part of its push to make the software development lifecycle increasingly autonomous. The team behind those products will also join Harness.
Cosmos will become the Harness Cosmos Software Factory Agent, which is designed to automate engineering work from an initial idea or requirement through merge-ready code.
From there, Harness’s existing agents for software delivery, security testing, runtime protection, and cost management will carry the work through deployment and production.
The acquisition brings Augment Code’s codebase intelligence together with Harness’s Software Delivery Knowledge Graph, which contains information about builds, deployments, infrastructure, security, and costs.
Harness said the combined system will give AI agents more complete context across the software development lifecycle, helping them understand both what is being built and what happens after software reaches production.
That context can also improve code earlier in the development process.
For example, before making a change, Harness Cosmos can use test cases, security requirements, previous incidents, and remediation history.
Once the code is created, Harness’s downstream agents can evaluate dependencies, security risks, deployment requirements, and other operational factors.
If testing, security review, or deployment identifies an issue, the system can send that information back to Cosmos so the agent can modify the code and repeat the process.
Harness Cosmos is designed to take requirements, assigned tickets, and reported bugs and turn them into reviewed pull requests.
A fleet of agents can plan a change, write the associated code and tests, and open a pull request while operating within isolated virtual machines.
Human engineers remain involved when judgment is required, including design approval and final merges.
Agents can also keep working on the same pull request when reviewers leave comments or automated checks fail.
Harness Cosmos includes prebuilt agent configurations such as Project Builder, PR Author, Deep Reviewer, and PR Fixer, which teams can customize for their own codebases and deploy across engineering organizations.
Augment Code’s Code Context Engine maintains a live understanding of the codebase to help AI-generated changes fit existing software architecture.
The platform also includes model routing, integrations with GitHub, Jira, and Slack, shared memory across engineering workflows, versioning capabilities, and budget controls.
Harness said the goal is for autonomous agents to operate continuously across coding, testing, security, deployment, and production while sharing context with one another.
The company is also working to integrate Cosmos with the identity, permissions, policies, and approval controls already used across the Harness platform.
Harness Cosmos is available now.
The broader Harness Autonomous SDLC Platform includes Software Delivery Agent, Security Testing Agent, Runtime Protection Agent, and Cost Management Agent.
Harness said its customers include United Airlines, Morningstar, and Choice Hotels, and the company reports that its technology can help customers accelerate releases by up to 75%, reduce cloud costs by up to 60%, and improve efficiency by up to 10x.
KEY QUOTES:
“AI’s impact on software will not be measured by how much code it generates, but by how much valuable software reaches customers. Augment Code built Cosmos to create a software factory for repeatable engineering work. With this acquisition, we are bringing code context together with delivery and production context to help agents make better changes from the start. When Harness downstream agents identify an issue while testing, securing, or deploying code, they send it back to Cosmos with the context to fix it.”
Jyoti Bansal, Founder and CEO of Harness
“We set out to bring AI to the entire software development lifecycle, starting with context-aware coding. Joining Harness is the next step toward that vision. Together, we can make engineering work increasingly autonomous, with engineers stepping in only where judgment really matters. We’ve seen software factories transform how companies build software. Now, with Harness, that same transformation is within reach for every team already on the Harness platform — and every team getting started.”
