Hitachi Rail Limited has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Clever Devices, a U.S.-based provider of intelligent transportation systems, as part of its strategy to expand into global digital mobility.
Clever Devices, headquartered in Woodbury, New York, develops advanced technology solutions that improve fleet management, passenger experience, and operational efficiency for transit agencies worldwide. The company is expected to generate over $220 million in revenue in 2026 and employs around 600 people, with operations spanning North America, Europe, and South America.
The acquisition marks a significant step in Hitachi Rail’s evolution beyond traditional rail infrastructure into broader multimodal mobility. By integrating Clever Devices’ Intelligent Transportation Systems with Hitachi Rail’s HMAX Mobility platform, the combined company aims to deliver enhanced, data-driven solutions across public transportation networks.
Clever Devices’ technologies, including onboard systems and centralized data platforms, will complement HMAX Mobility, which connects data from trains, signaling systems, and infrastructure to create an operational digital twin. The combined capabilities are expected to enable real-time multimodal transport solutions, improve service reliability, and optimize energy usage.
The deal also strengthens Hitachi Rail’s footprint in North America, where Clever Devices has a strong customer base that includes 8 of the 10 largest transit agencies in the region. Additionally, the acquisition supports broader sustainability goals by enabling more efficient and lower-emission public transport systems.
The deal is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close later in 2026.
