HPE Secures $1.2 Billion AMD Helios Order From Vultr

HPE has secured a $1.2 billion order from Vultr to deploy AMD Helios AI Rack by HPE systems across Vultr’s U.S. cloud data centers. The transaction represents HPE’s first order for the new AMD Helios platform.

The systems will be used to support growing service-provider and enterprise demand for AI model training and inference workloads.

The order extends a relationship between Vultr and Juniper Networks that began nearly three years ago and continues following HPE’s acquisition of Juniper Networks.

AMD designed Helios as a high-density platform for trillion-parameter model training and high-volume inference. Each rack integrates 72 AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, AMD Pensando Vulcano AI NICs and AMD ROCm software.

HPE’s networking architecture for Helios includes six HPE Juniper Networking QFX5252 scale-up Ethernet switch trays in each rack, connecting all 72 GPUs using high-bandwidth, low-latency Ethernet.

The platform combines HPE compute, Juniper networking, rack-scale engineering and direct liquid cooling to provide an integrated AI infrastructure system.

KEY QUOTES:

“AI is driving the largest infrastructure buildout in history and together with AMD and Vultr, we are building an open foundation to accelerate the next phase of AI. AMD Helios by HPE demonstrates HPE’s unique ability to engineer the complete AI architecture with rack-scale compute, scale-up networking, and direct liquid cooling, all delivered by our global services.”

Antonio Neri, President and CEO of HPE

“Demand for high-performance AI infrastructure continues to outpace available capacity, and our work with AMD and HPE enables us to bring Helios rack-scale compute and scale-up networking online for customers faster. Together, we’re delivering the memory capacity, interconnect performance, and energy efficiency customers need to run the largest and most demanding AI training and inference workloads.”
