Hubble: Interview With CEO Jeff Berger About Contact Lenses And Vision Care

Hubble is a vision care company that combines its own portfolio of contact lenses with a consumer experience focused on affordability, accessibility, and convenience. The company offers Hubble Classic 2.0, Hydro by Hubble, and SkyHy by Hubble lenses, along with leading national contact lens brands, and has sold more than 700 million prescription lenses since launching in 2016. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Hubble CEO Jeff Berger to learn more.

Jeff Berger’s Background

Jeff Berger

When asked about his background, Berger shared:

I’ve spent nearly two decades building, operating, and advising technology and consumer businesses. I founded Talent Inc., now Career.io, and spent eight years as CEO, growing the company to serve millions of customers around the world before selling it to BV Investment Partners.

After that, I spent several years as an Operating Partner at FJ Labs, working with founders and leadership teams across a wide range of businesses, from e-commerce and marketplaces to software and consumer technology.

Having both the operator and investor perspectives has shaped how I think about building companies, understanding what customers value, and turning growth into a durable business.

Ultimately, I realized how much I missed being an operator. I wanted to get back inside a company, work closely with a team, and take responsibility for building its next chapter.

Hubble stood out because it combines an established consumer brand and a large customer base with a mission I believe in: making quality vision care more affordable and convenient.

Primary Responsibilities

When asked about his primary responsibilities at Hubble, Berger explained:

As CEO, my responsibility is to set Hubble’s direction and make sure we have the team, priorities, and execution to deliver on it. That means balancing the experience we provide customers today with the investments that will drive our long-term growth.

My focus is on making the customer experience simpler and more flexible and using technology to improve how we operate.

Hubble has a strong foundation. My job is to help the team build on it, to stay close to our customers, make thoughtful decisions, and move quickly from ideas to meaningful improvements.

Favorite Memory

When asked about his favorite memory working for the company so far, Berger said:

I’m still relatively new to Hubble, so I’m making those memories now. What has stood out most in my first weeks is getting to know the team and seeing how much institutional knowledge and passion exists within the company.

I also joined at a particularly exciting moment. Hubble Classic 2.0 Daily Contact Lenses had recently launched nationwide, representing the biggest evolution of Hubble’s original daily lens since the company was founded.

There’s something energizing about joining a company at a moment when it can both celebrate how far it has come and ask what the next decade should look like.

Core Products And Features

Hubble

When asked about Hubble’s core products and features, Berger detailed:

Hubble is a vision care company that combines its own portfolio of contact lenses with a consumer experience designed around affordability, accessibility, and convenience.

Hubble Classic 2.0 daily contact lenses are the newest generation of our daily disposable lenses. We also offer Hydro by Hubble daily lenses and SkyHy by Hubble daily and monthly silicone hydrogel lenses, giving customers options at different price points and with different materials and features.

Consumers can also purchase leading national contact lens brands through Hubble.

The experience around those products is just as important. Hubble helped pioneer the direct-to-consumer subscription model for contact lenses, bringing the convenience of regular home delivery to a recurring need.

We’re continuing to improve that experience, making it easier for customers to purchase their lenses and manage their delivery schedules. Our goal is to make buying and staying stocked with contact lenses a simple part of everyday life.

Reintroducing Hubble

When asked about challenges in the sector and how Hubble is addressing them, Berger noted:

One exciting challenge is getting the word out about how much Hubble has evolved. With Hubble Classic 2.0 and our SkyHy by Hubble silicone hydrogel lenses, we have a broader story to tell and more customers we can serve.

These products give us a fresh opportunity to reintroduce Hubble. Building stronger relationships with eye care professionals is important, and we’re excited to share our new products with that community and learn from their feedback.

How The Technology Has Evolved

When asked how Hubble’s technology has evolved since launching, Berger explained:

Hubble started by making it easy to buy contact lenses online and receive regular home deliveries. Today, our technology supports more of the customer journey, from prescription verification to delivery management and support.

We’re exploring how AI and automation can make those interactions faster and more personalized.

Our ambition is to make Hubble the most convenient way to buy and manage contact lenses, with an experience that adapts to each customer’s needs.

Key Company Milestones

When asked about some of Hubble’s most significant milestones, Berger highlighted:

Launching in 2016 was the first major milestone, bringing a direct-to-consumer subscription model to an established category.

Since then, Hubble has sold more than 700 million prescription lenses and expanded from a single daily lens into a portfolio that includes silicone hydrogel options and leading national brands.

The nationwide launch of Hubble Classic 2.0 marks another significant step: advancing the original product that built the brand nearly a decade ago.

Together, these milestones show how Hubble has grown from a new way to buy contact lenses into a business with the scale and product breadth to reach many more customers.

Customer Relationships

When asked about specific customer success stories, Berger said:

Rather than single out one customer, I’d point to the relationships we’ve built with people who have been with Hubble for years.

It’s rewarding to see how the brand becomes part of their everyday lives, from the convenience of home delivery to the compact, colorful, easy-to-open boxes customers enjoy.

Contact lenses are a daily essential, and making that experience affordable, reliable, and a little more enjoyable is something we take pride in.

Financial Metrics

When asked about funding and revenue metrics, Berger shared:

As a privately held company, we don’t disclose financial metrics, but Hubble has sold more than 700 million prescription lenses since launching in 2016.

We’re focused on building sustainable, profitable growth by delivering products that customers value, earning their repeat business, and investing thoughtfully in opportunities to expand.

My experience as both an operator and investor has taught me that those fundamentals are what create lasting value.

Total Addressable Market

When discussing the total addressable market Hubble is pursuing, Berger explained:

We’re building a vision care company focused on serving contact lens wearers across the U.S. and Canada, including approximately 45 million people in the U.S. alone.

That gives us a substantial market to serve as we expand our product offering and reach customers with different needs and budgets.

Over time, we see opportunities to build on those relationships and serve more of their vision care needs.

Competitive Differentiation

When asked what differentiates Hubble from its competition, Berger emphasized:

One of Hubble’s biggest advantages is that we combine the mindset of a challenger brand with nearly a decade of operating experience.

We have a recognizable brand, established customer relationships, and an expanding portfolio built around quality contact lenses at more affordable prices.

SkyHy by Hubble is a great example: it uses silicone hydrogel, the same category of material found in many leading daily disposable lenses, at a more accessible price point.

We’re building on our experience while maintaining the entrepreneurial spirit to introduce new products and make purchasing and managing prescribed lenses easier.

Future Goals

When discussing Hubble’s future goals, Berger said:

Our goal is to build Hubble into a broader vision care company, starting with more contact lens options that serve different needs and budgets.

We want to make the customer experience more personalized and flexible and build stronger relationships with eye care professionals as we expand.

As we approach our second decade, the ambition is to bring Hubble’s promise of quality, affordability, and convenience to more people and more of their vision care needs.

A Fresh Look At Hubble

When invited to discuss another topic, Berger concluded:

I’d encourage people who haven’t looked at Hubble in a while to take a fresh look. There’s a lot happening across our products, and we’re excited to share it with both consumers and eye care professionals.

We also want to hear from them: what they value, what could be easier, and what they’d like to see from us next.

Helping shape that future alongside our customers and team is what makes being back in an operating role so rewarding.
