Pulse 2.0 interviewed Idle Smart founder and CEO Jeff Lynch to learn more.

Jeff Lynch’s Background

Jeff Lynch

Could you tell me more about your background? Lynch said:

“I’ve spent much of my career in leadership roles, both at startups and Fortune 500 companies like Thomson Reuters, Sprint-Nextel, and Embarq.  By design, I’ve had roles spanning very different disciplines – sales, strategy, customer care, operations, you name it.  I’m definitely a generalist in that way, but I’ve always believed that it’s helped me have both a good feel for how a business operates as well as how customers interact with us.  I’ve always enjoyed finding challenges in messy situations and building straightforward solutions that simply just work. When I had the chance to acquire the patent for Idle Smart, it immediately clicked for me as a way to fundamentally change how fleets operate, and I knew we could do it better and smarter than anyone else.”

Formation Of The Company

How did the idea for the company come together? Lynch shared:

“What stood out with Idle Smart first and foremost was that it was a better solution to an existing problem rather than a new solution to a new problem.  Every fleet in North America has a fuel problem – it’s their second largest operating expense – and so that’s a great spot to be in.  We also saw a large and fragmented marketplace. When we looked at the existing solutions, especially APUs, it just didn’t add up. I thought there was no way these were the best options for fleets. They can take days to install, cost upwards of $15,000 each (not including regular maintenance), and need replacing every 3-5 years. Even with all that, they still often don’t prevent cold starts or dead batteries.”

“Our goal was always to build a system that was genuinely driver-friendly and cost-effective for the entire fleet, not just one truck at a time. To make that happen, we decided early on to be a truly customer-centric company. We give every fleet a dedicated Customer Success Manager who is a real partner, helping them with everything from installation and setup to ongoing support, so they get all the benefits of our system without the added headaches.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Lynch reflected:
“For me, it’s seeing our solutions genuinely change how fleets operate and the satisfaction from our customers when they realize the real impact. Said another way, what we sold to them actually made good on the promise we made to them in the first place.  It’s those moments, where our technology visibly and measurably helps a business thrive and drivers gain comfort, that are the most rewarding.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Lynch explained:

“The flagship product is the Idle Smart System, a maintenance-free idle management solution for Class 8 fleets that cuts fuel costs, protects against dead batteries and cold starts, and keeps drivers comfortable year-round.”

“Our core features include Cabin Comfort, which maintains cab temperatures without unnecessary idling; Battery Protect, which monitors battery voltage to prevent no-start situations; and Cold Start Guard, which monitors coolant temperatures to prevent engine damage and fuel gelling. Our user-friendly platform, the SmartPortal, allows you to see when and why your trucks are idling, and adjust your fleet’s parameters right from your desk, without bringing your trucks to the shop. Idle Smart can even automatically adapt to real-time temperature and weather conditions for a truly automated experience.”

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Lynch acknowledged:

“There’s a lot of uncertainty in the marketplace, and it’s been a tough few years for the sector overall.  The rising cost and volatility of fuel are a never-ending battle for the industry. As I mentioned above, fuel is every fleet’s second-highest cost, so rising prices and general market volatility have certainly been a challenge. We overcome this by demonstrating the direct, measurable fuel savings our system delivers, often showing an ROI in less than two months. We don’t just talk about saving fuel; we show them how much they’re actually saving through our SmartPortal.”

“Another big challenge is unexpected downtime and maintenance costs. A truck not moving isn’t making money. Our response here is multi-faceted: our core system reduces engine wear, and with SmartInsights, we’re proactively preventing breakdowns by identifying issues before they sideline a truck. It shifts fleets from reactive “firefighting” to proactive management.”

Evolution Of The Company’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Lynch noted:

“Our technology has evolved dramatically since we first launched, always in response to a need we saw in the market and customer feedback. We started with our foundational automated idle reduction system in 2012, which helped drivers stay comfortable through our Cabin Comfort feature. Then came the critical safeguards against dead batteries and cold-starts with Battery Protect and Cold Start Guard in 2015. We introduced remote connectivity in 2017, allowing fleets to adjust truck settings remotely and access in-depth idle data. In 2024 and 2025, we’ve debuted real-time auto-adjustments and predictive maintenance insights to help fleets get even more out of their Idle Smart system. We’re continuously evolving to deliver impactful, time-saving solutions for fleets.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Lynch cited:

“We’ve had several major milestones that truly validate our impact in the industry. For instance, we’ve surpassed 500 million road miles each year over the past 3 years—a number that proves our system has reliably performed year in and year out. Another powerful metric is our 212% average fleet ROI. This is a direct measure of the financial value we deliver, as our customers see this return each and every month, which means that they don’t have to wait months for a financial payback. On top of that, we’re proud of our environmental impact, having celebrated reducing over 100 million pounds of CO2 emissions since June 2022, with an average of 22,000+ pounds reduced per truck annually.”

Customer Success Stories

Can you share any specific customer success stories? Lynch highlighted:

“We have a ton of great customer stories. For instance, Highway Transport saved over 16,000 gallons of diesel and prevented more than 2,000 potential no-start events, which is huge for avoiding downtime and jump-start costs. Another fleet used our SmartInsights tool to cut unplanned maintenance events by 23% and save over $34,000 in just four months. Their Director of Maintenance told us that the tool “caught trends that fault codes alone would have missed,” which perfectly sums up the power of predictive maintenance. Plus, feedback on driver satisfaction is key; a Director at Miller Trans Group said our system was “a no-brainer.” This sentiment, echoed by the fact that the majority of drivers say they sleep soundly with Idle Smart after only a week, shows we’re improving both the bottom line and driver quality of life.”

Total Addressable Market

What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Lynch assessed:

“We’re focused on the Class 7 and 8 heavy-duty trucking market in North America.  There are about 11M Class 7 and 8 trucks in North America today.”

“We work best with fleets that have 25 or more trucks. Our goal is to serve businesses that own their trucks, often have their own maintenance shops, and are looking for advanced, but easy-to-implement, technology to drive efficiency.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Lynch affirmed:

“What really sets us apart is our philosophy that puts drivers at the center. Through our automated technology and dedicated support team, we deliver hands-free solutions that not only save money for fleets but also keep drivers comfortable and their trucks road-ready. Not only that, but we take a fleet-focused approach to idle management. APUs and OEM systems are great for individual trucks, but they lack the interconnectedness and remote adjustment capabilities modern fleets need to thrive in a competitive market. We make idle management as simple as possible; our system works across all major OEMs and doesn’t require maintenance, so fleets can use one system for their whole fleet and start seeing returns on their investment right away without having to worry about added maintenance costs.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? Lynch emphasized:

“We want to become the go-to fleet efficiency solution for heavy-duty fleets. We want to keep raising the bar for efficiency by continuously improving our software, but we’re also looking into expanding into other segments of the market. The ultimate goal is to make it even easier for fleets to save a ton of money on fuel, cut down on downtime, and get a real competitive edge in a tough market.”

Additional Thoughts

Any other topics you would like to discuss? Lynch concluded:

“We’re in a good position to help fleets navigate tough economic times by optimizing the assets they already have and providing an immediate and constant payback. During a downturn, the instinct for many companies is to cut costs and halt new investments, but history shows that the companies that continue to invest strategically in their core operations often recover sooner and grow faster. Idle Smart is a strategic investment that can be a crucial tool for controlling the biggest variable costs fleets face today: fuel and maintenance. Our system delivers a fast, tangible ROI, often in just a few months, putting money back into a company’s operating budget when they need it most.”
