iManage is a leading provider of intelligent cloud-enabled software that helps legal, accounting, and financial professionals securely manage, govern, and collaborate on documents and emails using AI-powered secure knowledge work platforms. Pulse 2.0 interviewed iManage CIO Joe Logan to learn more.

Joe Logan’s Background

Joe Logan

Could you tell me more about your background? Logan said:

“I’m a problem solver at heart. I attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where I studied Organizational Psychology. From there, I took a roundabout path through the world of tech, including stints at Hewlett Packard Enterprise as a solution architect and more than a decade running my own operations and systems consulting business. From there, I spent nearly 7 years in a technical and operations capacity at Innovista Health Solutions, eventually becoming the CIO there. That experience led to my current CIO role at iManage, the company dedicated to Making Knowledge Work.”

“As CIO here at iManage, I’m responsible for the alignment of security, data engineering, and IT. By implementing process-oriented practices, I enable iManage to do more with our data, leading to better-informed business decisions and an improved customer experience.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products and features? Logan explained:

“The iManage cloud-native platform is at the center of the knowledge economy, enabling organizations to work more productively, collaboratively, and securely. iManage helps leading organizations manage documents and emails more efficiently, protect vital information assets, and leverage knowledge to drive better business outcomes. We employ award-winning AI-enabled technology, an extensive partner ecosystem, and a customer-centric approach to provide support and guidance organizations can trust.”

“iManage is relied on by more than one million professionals at 4,000 organizations around the world, including 78 percent of the top global law firms and 41 percent of Fortune 100 corporations.”

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Logan acknowledged:

“As a company evolves from a primarily entrepreneurial environment to more of a sustained growth business with an increasing number of specialized individuals, there are challenges involved in institutionalizing consistent, scalable processes – particularly against the backdrop of a historical culture based on knowing the right person to go to.”

“In developing these consistent, scalable processes, I focused on identifying change agents across the organization who were energized by the vision of reducing friction and increasing efficiency. This enabled me to take a “middle‑out” approach rather than a traditional “top‑down” model, building momentum from within. By doing so, I created a sequence of small, visible wins that steadily expanded our reach and addressed significant change‑management challenges through bite‑sized, measurable outcomes.”

Evolution Of The Company’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Logan noted:

“Our flagship document and email management product, iManage Work, was launched three decades ago and established the company’s reputation among knowledge workers. Since then, iManage has introduced new products that add value to customers in legal, financial services, accounting, and other knowledge-centric fields and change the way they get work done.”

“In addition to Document & Email Management, the iManage platform now encompasses fully integrated products for Security & Governance, Risk & Compliance, Knowledge Search & Management, Legal Transaction Management, and Task & Workflow Management – with AI-powered services built natively into the iManage knowledge work platform to improve productivity, drive additional value from knowledge assets, and protect against security risks.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Logan cited:

“CEO Neil Araujo co-founded iManage in 1995, with the idea to create a document management solution for knowledge workers, a sector that was underserved in terms of the tools available for their specific requirements.”

“In 1999, the company went public. In 2003, the company merged with Interwoven, one of the largest Web content management providers. In 2009, Interwoven was acquired by Autonomy, a leading enterprise software company specializing in analysis of big data. Autonomy was then acquired by HP in 2011 and integrated into its software division.”

“In 2015, management led the divestiture of the iManage suite of products from HP. They took learnings from the previous 20 years – experiences ranging from a small cap public company, to one under corporate ownership – to evolve as a company.”

“The 10 years that have passed since that crucial “fork in the road” have shown how much iManage has prospered under this new direction and “stakeholder mindset.” The latest milestone involves partnering with Bain Capital Tech Partners in 2023 as a minority investor. We’re now more than two years into this latest chapter and couldn’t be more excited about the direction we’re headed.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Logan affirmed:

“We view our business as a stakeholder business rather than a shareholder business, and to us this means that all stakeholders of iManage, including our employees, partners, customers and shareholders, benefit from our existence and growth. The concept of sustaining a stakeholder mindset is embedded into our corporate ownership structure, our values, and our operating model through intentional decisions and choices.”

“We also differentiate ourselves through our intelligent and responsible approach to incorporating new technologies like AI. At iManage, we believe AI Confidence™ isn’t something you can buy. It’s something you build – on a stable, secure foundation that allows you to embrace change with clarity and control.”

“iManage helps build this AI confidence with security that meets the highest standards, the ability to trace every AI insight back to a specific data source, tools that fit into existing workflows, the ability to easily capture knowledge and turn it into collective intelligence, and by serving as a trusted partner with a 30-year track record of “being there” for customers – not just another product developer.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? Logan concluded:

“Continuing on the AI path by incorporating AI functionality that improves knowledge workers’ daily lives in a secure and pragmatic way.”
