Inherent announced that it has closed a $50 million seed funding round to support its mission of building AI agents capable of discovering new knowledge. The company said it was created from the ground up as a research lab focused on developing AI systems that can drive scientific inquiry and innovation.
The seed round was led by Index Ventures and Radical Ventures, with participation from NVentures, Ex/Ante, Metaplanet, Macroscopic Ventures, Mythos Ventures, Charlie Songhurst, Mike Chalfen, David Luan, Dwarkesh Patel, Thomas Wolf, Jakob Foerster, and Max Jaderberg. The company also noted that it is advised by Matt Clifford.
Headquartered in London, Inherent operates as a Public Benefit Corporation. The company believes the emergence of machine-driven scientific research will require both a new generation of AI systems and a new type of research institution. As part of its approach, Inherent said it is focused on continuously improving its own research organization while exploring new models of scientific discovery and human-machine collaboration.
According to the company, its research efforts are centered on understanding how AI can contribute to scientific innovation, developing new forms of collaboration between humans and AI systems, and creating mechanisms for recursive self-improvement that expand human agency and influence over outcomes.
