Instagram has launched Instants, a new feature that lets users share photos in real time with their Close Friends or mutual followers. The feature emphasizes spontaneous and authentic sharing by allowing users to capture and send photos that disappear after they are viewed or after 24 hours.
Instants can be accessed directly within the Instagram app or through a standalone Instants app, which opens immediately to the camera experience. Users can start an Instant by tapping the photo pile icon in their Instagram inbox or by launching the dedicated app. Photos must be captured live through the camera, as uploads from the device’s gallery are not permitted. Users may add captions but cannot further edit the photos before sharing.
Recipients of Instants can reply with emojis and send their own Instants. Shared Instants appear as a stack of photos inside inboxes and disappear after they have been opened. The standalone Instants app is rolling out on both iOS and Android in select countries, while the feature itself is available globally within Instagram starting today.
Instagram also introduced several supporting features aimed at simplifying private sharing. Shared Instants are stored in a private archive visible only to the sender for up to one year. Users can create recap compilations from archived Instants and share them to Instagram Stories. Additional controls include screenshot and screen recording protections, an undo option for unsending Instants before they are viewed, and a snooze function that temporarily pauses incoming Instants notifications.
The company said that Instagram’s existing safety and privacy systems extend fully to Instants. Features such as Block, Mute, Restrict, reporting tools, and content filters are all supported. Users can only receive Instants from Close Friends or mutual followers they follow back.
For teens, Instants is integrated automatically into Instagram’s Teen Accounts and Family Center supervision tools. Daily time spent using Instants contributes toward Instagram time limits for teen users. Sleep Mode restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. also apply automatically, muting notifications and limiting access overnight. Parents supervising teen accounts will receive notifications when their teen first downloads the standalone Instants app.
Instagram said the goal behind Instants is to create a lightweight and authentic way for users to stay connected with friends in the moment without the pressure of permanent or heavily edited content.
