Intel has hired Masooma Bhaiwala, who is a former corporate vice president at AMD. At Intel, Bhaiwala will be the head of Intel’s GPU efforts. Bhaiwala told CRN that her full title at Intel is vice president of discrete GPU SoCs.
This means that Bhaiwala will be overseeing the development of GPUs for clients and data center segments. Plus Bhaiwala will also be working in Intel’s Graphics and Throughput Computing Hardware Engineering organization, which is part of the Intel Architecture, Graphics and Software group led by Raja Koduri. Koduri also previously worked at AMD between 2013 and 2017, most recently as the SVP and chief architect of Radeon Technologies.
“After 15+ amazing years at AMD, I have decided to take on a different opportunity… It was a truly fun ride, with an incredible team, during which we built some truly cool chips,” wrote Bhaiwala in a LinkedIn post.
CRN also pointed out that Intel also brought in a number of talented engineers from AMD, including Mark Hirsch (former AMD CVP Systems Engineering in the Radeon Technology Group), Jim Keller (former architect of the K8 and Zen architectures at AMD), Balaji Kanigicherla (former Senior Director of Design Engineering at AMD), Kalyan Thumaty (former CVP of design methodology, engineer grid, and IT at AMD), and Joseph Facca (former R&D Site Leader at AMD).
Intel is planning to make a giant leap in the GPU space next year. And the company is planning to release its first discrete GPU in 2020. The company also recently revealed its 7nm HPC and deep leaning GPU (code-named Ponte Vecchio). The discrete GPU products will be based on Intel’s Xe architecture.
