Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) has announced a new chip called Gaudi2, which handles artificial intelligence computing. This chip will compete directly against AI chips built by Nvidia.

Gaudi2 is known as the second generation processor from Habana Labs, which is an Israel-based AI chip company that Intel acquired in late 2019 for about $2 billion. The demand for AI chips have been surging in recent years as it is one of the fastest-growing areas in data centers.

One of the key advantages that Nvidia has is its software platform CUDA. Intel is also focusing more on software development for AI computing as well.

“CUDA is not a moat that Nvidia can really stand on for long,” said Habana Labs chief business officer Eitan Medina in an interview with Reuters. “Now the question is who can do the work efficiently?”

Medina also pointed out that Intel’s software platform is an open standard and is free to download from GitHub. Plus Medina pointed out that Gaudi2 is twice as fast as Habana’s previous AI chip – which was manufactured from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s 7-nanometer transistor technology from 16-nanometers previously.

Plus Intel also introduced a new chip called Greco, which was designed for inferencing work. This includes taking an AI algorithm and making predictions or identifying objects.

“We intend to invest and innovate to lead this market,” explained Sandra Rivera, the head of Intel’s data center and AI. And Rivera said that the AI chip market is expected to grow about 25% a year over the next 5 years to reach about $50 billion.
