Intuitive Machines: $20 Million In NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Contracts Awarded For LROC And ShadowCam Operations

Intuitive Machines announced that it has been named the prime contractor for operations of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) and the ShadowCam instrument, strengthening the company’s role in lunar mapping, navigation, and infrastructure services for future Moon exploration missions.

The two NASA-related contracts include a $15.5 million cost-plus-fixed-fee three-year prime contract for LROC operations and a $4.5 million cost-plus-fixed-fee three-year prime contract for ShadowCam operations. Under these agreements, Intuitive Machines will oversee imaging operations, data storage and analysis, mission support, lunar surface mapping activities, and advanced imaging of permanently shadowed regions on the Moon.

LROC is a key imaging instrument aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, while ShadowCam is a specialized lunar imaging camera aboard the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter designed to provide visibility in dark and shadowed lunar environments.

The company said it plans to integrate the publicly available LROC Planetary Data System archive into its planned lunar data relay satellite constellation to support orbital and surface navigation services for both government and commercial missions.

According to Intuitive Machines, the LROC mission has captured more than 2.6 million Narrow Angle Camera images and over 640,000 Wide Angle Camera images since the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter launched in 2009. These images are used to create global terrain models, landing site analyses, and lunar surface composition maps that support NASA’s Artemis campaign and commercial lunar exploration missions.

The company noted that the data archive represents a substantial portion of NASA’s more than 1.8 petabytes of Planetary Data System storage and serves as critical infrastructure for lunar mission planning and operations.

Intuitive Machines also highlighted that the lunar imagery and mapping data will support its IM-3 mission, a planned robotic lunar landing mission under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. IM-3 is expected to target the Reiner Gamma region on the Moon.

The company said the new contracts complement its broader strategy of building lunar infrastructure capabilities by combining its planned lunar data relay satellite constellation, navigation expertise from its wholly owned KinetX subsidiary, and advanced lunar imaging operations.

Steve Altemus, CEO of Intuitive Machines, said the LROC team’s lunar mapping expertise will support the company’s efforts to deliver secure real-time navigation and precision lunar surface operations.

KEY QUOTES:
