Iridium Communications announced that it has completed its acquisition of Aireon. Aireon operates the world’s only space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast air traffic surveillance system.

The acquisition expands Iridium’s role in the aviation ecosystem. The company is combining Aireon’s space-based air traffic surveillance and aviation intelligence services with Iridium’s global satellite communications network and resilient positioning, navigation, and timing capabilities.

Iridium said the combination creates a more comprehensive platform for real-time visibility, trusted connectivity, and actionable operational data. The company plans to deliver these capabilities to aviation stakeholders worldwide.

As airspace becomes more complex and increasingly dependent on resilient infrastructure, Iridium said the acquisition positions it to provide critical services that improve safety, efficiency, and operational decision-making. The deal is also part of Iridium’s strategy to support the future of aviation safety.

Aireon will continue operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Iridium. The business will remain focused on air traffic surveillance and aviation data services.

Don Thoma will continue serving as CEO of Aireon. He will report to Iridium CEO Matt Desch, providing leadership continuity while aligning Aireon more closely with Iridium’s broader strategy.

Iridium operates a global mobile satellite network that supports voice, data, messaging, positioning, navigation, timing, and aircraft surveillance services. Through the Aireon acquisition, Iridium is strengthening its platform for safety-focused operations across aviation and related markets.
