JJ Watt Invests In Base Power Through $1 Billion Series D And Becomes A Customer

Former professional football player JJ Watt has invested in Base Power as part of the Texas energy company’s $1 billion Series D financing. Watt has also become a Base customer and said switching his Houston home to the company’s service reduced his power bill by more than 20%.

Base is building a distributed network of home batteries designed to provide backup power during outages and support the broader electricity grid.

Because Base generates revenue by using its batteries to provide grid services, homeowners can receive backup power for an upfront cost that is typically limited to a few hundred dollars while also gaining access to lower electricity costs.

Since launching publicly in 2024, Base has expanded to more than 30,000 homes across Texas and recently entered Illinois.

Watt has lived in Texas for approximately 15 years and said his experience with high electricity costs and unreliable service attracted him to the company.

The investment represents Watt’s first involvement in the energy sector. His broader portfolio includes sports and consumer companies, including an ownership interest in Burnley Football Club.

KEY QUOTES:

“I like companies that solve real problems, and Base is lowering power bills, protecting families and building the whole thing themselves right here in Texas.”
