Joby Aviation announced that it has completed a series of piloted demonstration flights across the San Francisco Bay Area, highlighting progress toward commercializing its electric air taxi service. The company said the flights showcased its aircraft’s ability to operate in one of the nation’s most congested urban regions while demonstrating the potential for quiet, emissions-free air mobility.
The demonstration flight took off from Oakland International Airport and crossed San Francisco Bay toward the Golden Gate Bridge before turning above the Marin Headlands. The aircraft used on the flight, N545JX, was piloted by Andrea Pingitore.
According to the company, the Bay Area demonstration marks the launch of Joby’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour, a nationwide campaign designed to introduce Americans to electric air taxi technology as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of the United States. The tour will feature additional flights and demonstrations in cities across the country.
Joby said the flight also highlights its readiness to scale operations following thousands of test flights and more than 50,000 miles logged across its aircraft fleet. The company is working toward regulatory certification and expects further progress this year as the Federal Aviation Administration conducts testing using Joby’s first FAA-conforming aircraft.
The company has also been selected as a partner on multiple winning applications under the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, which aims to accelerate early air taxi operations in the United States. Through the program, Joby has the opportunity to begin early operations across 10 states: Arizona, Florida, Idaho, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and Utah.
Joby believes electric air taxis could help reduce congestion in major cities. In San Francisco, drivers lost an average of 112 hours to traffic in 2025, making it the third-most-congested city in the U.S., according to data cited in the announcement. The company said its aircraft could shorten long commutes by providing fast aerial transportation between urban hubs.
To support anticipated demand, Joby is expanding its manufacturing footprint. The company recently acquired a 700,000-square-foot facility in Dayton, Ohio, which will complement its existing production operations in Marina, California and its powertrain facility in San Carlos, California. Joby plans to increase production to up to 4 aircraft per month in 2027, with the Dayton facilities eventually capable of supporting up to 500 aircraft annually.
The company is also developing partnerships with transportation providers, including Uber and Delta Air Lines, to help integrate air taxi flights into broader travel networks.
