King & Spalding has added Meredith Pohl as a partner in its Business Litigation practice group, strengthening the firm’s complex commercial litigation and investigations capabilities in Washington, D.C.
Pohl joins the firm from Kirkland & Ellis, where she was a partner. Her practice focuses on high-stakes commercial disputes in federal court, as well as congressional, governmental and regulatory investigations.
She advises clients across sectors including pharmaceuticals, energy and other heavily regulated industries. Her experience also includes antitrust matters, congressional investigations and crisis-related disputes that can involve overlapping legal, political and reputational risks.
The appointment expands King & Spalding’s ability to represent companies facing litigation and investigations involving multiple government bodies, regulators and private parties.
Complex commercial cases can require coordination across trial strategy, regulatory compliance, government relations, internal investigations and public communications. Pohl’s background in private practice and government service gives her experience navigating each of these areas.
Before entering private practice, Pohl held several roles in the U.S. Senate. She served as Deputy General Counsel to Senator Rob Portman and as counsel for the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations conducts inquiries involving government operations, corporate conduct, financial activity and other matters of public interest. Lawyers representing companies before congressional committees must understand both traditional legal processes and the distinct procedural and political considerations involved in legislative investigations.
Pohl’s Senate experience strengthens her ability to advise clients responding to document requests, subpoenas, interviews, hearings and other congressional demands.
Her work can also help companies prepare executives for testimony, manage interactions with lawmakers and coordinate congressional responses with related litigation or regulatory proceedings.
Congressional investigations may develop alongside enforcement actions by federal agencies or lawsuits brought by private parties. Statements or documents provided in one proceeding can influence another, requiring companies to maintain a consistent strategy across several forums.
Pohl’s federal court experience includes complex disputes involving sophisticated commercial and regulatory issues. These matters can involve substantial financial exposure, sensitive business information and questions affecting a client’s broader operations.
Her pharmaceutical work may include disputes and investigations involving competition, pricing, product distribution and other issues affecting life sciences companies.
In the energy sector, companies frequently face litigation and investigations related to commercial agreements, market activity, regulatory obligations and government policy.
Pohl’s antitrust experience adds another dimension to King & Spalding’s litigation platform as companies encounter increased scrutiny of transactions, business practices and competitive conduct.
The firm said her arrival will support its litigation, congressional investigations and crisis management practices while further diversifying the capabilities available through its Washington office.
Pohl previously served as a judicial law clerk for judges on the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Tenth and Fifth Circuits.
Federal appellate clerkships provide lawyers with direct experience analyzing complex legal arguments, evaluating trial court decisions and understanding how judges approach written and oral advocacy.
She earned her law degree summa cum laude from the University of Mississippi School of Law and received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University.
Pohl’s appointment reflects King & Spalding’s continued investment in experienced litigators who can build practices across the firm’s international platform.
The firm has approximately 1,300 lawyers across 26 offices in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Its lawyers have handled matters in more than 160 countries.
From Washington, Pohl will collaborate with colleagues across the firm’s litigation, investigations, antitrust, life sciences, energy and government matters practices.
Her experience advising clients at the intersection of litigation and government scrutiny is expected to complement King & Spalding’s work for companies confronting complex disputes and rapidly developing crises.
