Kraig Biocraft Laboratories has shipped its first commercial order of recombinant spider silk yarn, marking a move from scaled production into customer-driven textile development for a globally recognized performance sports brand.
The Ann Arbor, Michigan-based biotechnology company said the yarn was produced to fulfill a purchase commitment from the unnamed brand as part of a confidential pilot development program.
The material was custom processed to the customer’s specifications and is slated for development into what Kraig Labs described as a first-of-its-kind performance textile.
The company did not disclose the identity of the customer, the size of the purchase commitment, or the financial value of the order.
Kraig Labs emphasized that the volume shipped is intentionally small because the project is designed as a precision application rather than a bulk textile order.
The company believes high-performance sports apparel provides a particularly demanding environment for evaluating the material because characteristics such as strength, flexibility, toughness, and low weight can directly affect product performance.
Kraig Labs develops recombinant spider silk using genetically engineered silkworms that incorporate key spider silk proteins into the fibers they produce.
The approach is intended to combine characteristics associated with spider silk with an established biological silk-production process.
The shipment represents an important commercialization step because the material is moving beyond internal development and scaled production into a product development program driven by the specifications of an external customer.
The performance sports brand is expected to use the yarn in development work for a new textile, providing Kraig Labs with an opportunity to demonstrate how its material behaves in a demanding commercial application.
The company views elite athletic apparel as a proving ground for recombinant spider silk, particularly where improved strength-to-weight characteristics and durability could provide functional advantages.
Kraig Labs said successful validation in the category could create opportunities for additional work with brands across the wider performance apparel market.
The shipment also comes as textile manufacturers evaluate alternatives to established fibers while attempting to balance performance, cost, manufacturing reliability, and sustainability.
Kraig Labs cited the Textile Exchange’s Materials Market Report 2026, which reported that global fiber production reached a record 139 million metric tons in 2025.
Polyester represented 59% of total global fiber production, while 88% of polyester production came from virgin fossil-based sources, according to the figures cited by the company.
Those figures illustrate the scale that emerging fiber technologies ultimately face when attempting to move from specialized applications into broader textile markets.
New materials must not only demonstrate differentiated properties but also prove they can be produced consistently and integrated into existing manufacturing processes.
For Kraig Labs, the current shipment is focused on demonstrating performance rather than achieving immediate large-volume production.
The company believes validation in an elite sports application could provide evidence that recombinant spider silk can satisfy technical requirements that are difficult for both natural and synthetic materials to meet.
A successful pilot could also create opportunities for larger orders or additional partnerships, although Kraig Labs did not announce any follow-on purchase commitments.
The shipment represents the company’s first commercial yarn delivery and gives the customer physical material to test and develop into an end product.
Kraig Labs has spent years developing genetically engineered spider silk-based fiber technologies with the goal of moving the material from research into commercial manufacturing.
The company said the latest order represents a step toward broader adoption by demonstrating that it can produce yarn to a customer’s technical specifications and deliver it for real-world textile development.
KEY QUOTES:
“Completing the delivery of this spider silk yarn is a huge milestone for Kraig Labs. The volume is small by design. This is a precision application, not a bulk order. It is exactly the kind of application where spider silk’s real advantages can be highlighted. Strength, flexibility, toughness, and light weight, under conditions pushing materials to their limits. This application is a shining example of how spider silk can transform markets.”
“High-performance sport is where materials prove themselves. Performance wins. That is the only thing that matters in elite sport. It’s about how it performs when everything is on the line, and that’s exactly what we intend to prove.”
“This is the kind of project that changes the conversation. When a brand at this level puts our material to the test, the results speak for themselves. We intend for this to be the first of many.”
