Romanian startup Kyndred has raised €500,000 in pre-seed funding from Early Game Ventures to develop AI companions designed to combine persistent memory, voice, animation, and everyday assistance into a more continuous relationship with users.
Kyndred was founded in 2026 by serial entrepreneurs Alex Băraru and Rareș Moșescu, the co-founders of Meditații.ro, a business that has generated more than €15 million in gross merchandise value.
The startup is developing AI characters intended to move beyond conventional chatbots and task-based digital assistants.
Kyndred’s thesis is that consumers will increasingly interact with numerous AI agents embedded inside services ranging from banking and utility payments to e-commerce, entertainment, and productivity applications.
Rather than asking users to manage dozens of separate AI interactions, Kyndred wants to provide a persistent companion that learns a person’s habits and preferences and helps navigate those systems on the user’s behalf.
The company envisions those companions having a recognizable face, voice, long-term memory, and ongoing knowledge of the user’s interests, obligations, and routines.
Early Game Ventures argues that such technology could eventually function more like an AI-native super-app than a traditional software interface.
Kyndred’s flagship companion, Maya, combines real-time generative Live2D animation, facial expressions, lip-syncing, body language, emotion-aware voice technology, and a tiered memory architecture designed to preserve information the user considers important.
Maya is available through Kyndred’s applications for iOS, Android, and desktop.
On PCs, the character can run over other applications, allowing it to stay visible while users work, study, play games, or do other things.
Kyndred’s founders say the distinction between an AI assistant and an AI companion is less about raw model capability and more about the relationship users develop with the interface.
Traditional assistants tend to be transactional: a user asks a question or requests a task and then leaves.
Kyndred wants its characters to create a more persistent experience, so users return regularly even when they don’t have a specific task to complete.
The concept originated while the founders were operating Meditații.ro.
They wanted an AI tutor for the platform but found that the product they envisioned wasn’t available, so they built their own AI character in about six months.
Kyndred began attracting potential customers before completing the product.
According to the company, animations of the character generated interest among hundreds of members of the founders’ existing community, enabling the startup to make its first sales through a pre-launch campaign after the animations went viral.
Maya has already attracted more than 150 paying customers within three months of launch.
Kyndred plans to use the pre-seed financing entirely for product development, infrastructure, customer growth, and hiring.
Product investments will include improvements to Maya as well as development of additional AI companions.
The company is currently seeking an AI Engineer and Product Engineer as part of the expansion.
Early Game Ventures’ second fund is capitalized through the Recovery Equity Fund, managed by the European Investment Fund and financed through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan under NextGenerationEU.
For Kyndred, the investment provides capital to test whether persistent AI characters can become a more frequently used interface for interacting with artificial intelligence and digital services.
