L.L.Bean will reopen its reimagined flagship store in Freeport, Maine, beginning September 18 after completing a multiyear redevelopment representing more than $50 million of investment in the company’s longtime retail campus.
The grand reopening is scheduled for September 18 through September 20, with additional celebrations continuing through October.
The project, which L.L.Bean has called the Freeport Experience, represents the largest investment in the flagship property’s history and is intended to modernize the store while retaining its connection to the company’s Maine heritage.
Major changes include a redesigned entrance and façade, expanded shopping areas, improved accessibility and new outdoor gathering spaces.
The store’s iconic trout pond is returning in a larger, multi-level format, while an expanded stream tank will provide additional underwater viewing areas.
L.L.Bean is also introducing a new 1912 Café, an expanded children’s area and a Custom Shop for personalized gear.
The broader campus work includes changes to Discovery Park and infrastructure intended to support more community events and better connect the L.L.Bean property with downtown Freeport.
L.L.Bean first announced the redevelopment in January 2023.
During major portions of construction, much of the flagship’s merchandise was temporarily moved into Camp L.L.Bean, a roughly 28,000-square-foot temporary retail structure on the property.
The flagship has particular significance to the company because Freeport has served as L.L.Bean’s home for more than a century and the retail campus has developed into one of Maine’s major visitor destinations.
